Hello everyone!
First post, so I apologize if it’s long, and not in the right place. I bought a 91fj80 almost a year ago and I love it, my kids love getting taken to school in it, and I enjoy using it as an errand runner around town. It has been a love hate relationship with the original 3fe. When I bought it you could tell it was being held together with bandaids and bubble gum, but it held together none the less. last week it finally decided to kick the bucket, and I am unsure of what to do next. I fully intend to replace it with a 2UZ. That being said I am a little over my head in this as I have never done an engine swap. If I understand right, I need the OEM harness and ECM for the 2UZ and the A340F trans. As well as a stand alone harness to integrate them to the dash harness. But I am unsure of what will and will not work as well as what else I need to make this happen. Also what I should update while have the engine out. My other issue is I am located in Wisconsin, and I am very far away from any useful specialty shops, so it appears I am on my own. Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

Great idea!!! (shut up all you 3FE lovers) I think the 2UZ is the best (gasoline powered) V8 Toyota ever made.

Yes, you'll need the engine and transmission for an easy(er) swap, but you have a choice between the A343F in the 1st gen 100 series, or the A750F in the 2nd gen. I'd get the A750F if I could, because Toyota parts for the A343F are getting hard to find, and most have to come from Japan.

As an alternative, you can get the marine version, which is bare bones, doesn't use the ECM lockout garbage, and is a much simpler engine. Best of all possible worlds would be the marine version and a manual gearbox, then your electrical problems almost all go away.

Good luck either way! Maybe you can donate the 3FE to one of the 3FE fans!

I never thought amount the marine angle that’s a good out the box idea! I would like to stay with an automatic (I know manual is is always better) but out of convenience I want an automatic. I was going to also install the delta vs pro harness wiring kit, and dual battery set up to cut down on the old wiring.

I think you have the 1FZ shoved up so far in there, there is no hope...🤣

What does that mean?
Not 100% sure what happened I’ve noticed that it’s been a little sluggish the last couple of weeks and started sounding a little rough. I was driving home from the store and stopped at a stop sign. Started knocking and sputtering when I pressed the throttle. Had no power and wouldn’t stay running unless I pressed the pedal (eventually stopped running all together). Also ran extremely hot, which has never happened before.

So you've done no diagnostics and went directly to an engine swap?
If you get a flat tire do you get a new car?

Well since we are being so forward, I don’t really care or want to save the 3FE. It leaks oil from just about everywhere, and didn’t run when I bought it, I got it running, and knew it was only a matter of time before the neglect caught up to it. The current situation has all the signs of a blown head gasket but it’s not worth it to me to sink money into an engine I don’t want. You’re more than welcome to come give me a hand!

I have an early 2UZ and a 100-series transmission stashed away for swapping into our other 80, so I'm interested in the marine variant (which I didn't know existed). Could the marine harness and ECU be swapped over to a standard 2UZ?

For clarification there is no off–the–shelf marine 2UZ. There is a commercial marine 2JZ, but that's a straight 6, not a V8. However, there are boat guys all over Florida making the 2UZ work in really fast boats. I don't have any detailed information or contacts, you'll have to search that yourself. You could start with KSR in Gainesville, FL.

So, to answer your question, yes it can be done, at least as far as the engine swap is concerned; the boats use an aftermarket controller. That gets rid of the immobilizer stuff; or you can get someone to flash an ECM for you "for testing use" that doesn't need a key. There is plenty of YT info on this; it's the thing down under, not only for Land Cruisers but Supras, which they apparently race there.

The transmission will take you a little more effort, which is why I mentioned using a manual, because it won't have any electical connection, other than a switch to turn on the backup lights. The A343F still needs the entire 100 series ECM because the transmission controller is integrated, just like the 3rd gen 80s. There are threads here on using various engine transmission combinations. You'll have to decide what combination you want to build around and then search for particulars.

In the vendor section you can find 2uz swap wire harnesses that are for sale.
I will definitely use that when the time comes, I will be rebuilding the new engine and a new harness won’t hurt. I’m more looking for what drive shaft I should use and if I will need a custom one for front and rear. Like I said I’m new so unsure of the fitment.
