I am rebuilding the brake system on my 79 fj40. I finished front calipers and now am moving to the rear. I would like to rebuild the 4 original Pistons. I can't find a kit or part number for a kit. I have found kits for pre 75 years. Anybody know of a kit?

I just did my 1981 and was able to get everything through Toyota. Check there. My part number is in the picture. Not sure what the 79 setup looks like.

1981 is different than 1979
81 uses 1 cylinder per side
79 uses 2 cylinders per side

for what new cylinders cost, it is not worth my time to rebuild them, especially if there is any pitting in them

Agreed puppies, for that matter you can get oem reman calipers for approximately 55 bucks each. Part numbers are 47730-60021-84 and 47750-60021-84. That’s the dealer’s online price by the way. Order them, when you get the call their in take the old ones with to get the core charge back. Easy peasy.

I think he needs wheel cylinders, not calipers. Looks like maybe 47570-69045 is the part number for a wheel cylinder. Wheel cylinder rebuild kits might be 04476-60032.

Rear wheel cylinder "cup" kit

I enjoy rebuilding as much as possible. I feel accomplished when it's successful and I also like the idea of "keeping the family together" if possible. Of course if a part is not salvageable ....it gets replaced! Example..she is getting all new stainless brake hoses. And new brake lines🍻

Wow! I need to do my 81. what process did you use for the iron housing?
Just wire wheeling with soft wires, the housing isn’t that tough, then painting with caliper paint. New cylinders were available from Toyota but I’m trying to keep as many original parts as possible and I enjoy the work.

Well, the Raybestos part number is there anyway. Plus we usually get a Mud discount of 5%.

Click Me for Mud!

That's the most recent I've seen.
