Below is a list of all of the links I found discussing rear view mirrors. But my problem is slightly different. My inside rear view mirror fell off. It appears that there is a metal thing screwed into the ceiling and the rear view mirror somehow fits into it. See the two pictures below.

Any ideas on how I am supposed to put the mirror back on? Do I need to bend any any ends of the metal thing screwed to the ceiling? Does one end of the mirror hook to the metal thing first and then I pound the other side in? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Take off the plastic covering. I think you will see two screw holes that have been covered by some sound deadening material.

Yes, first step is to pop the plastic cover off.

Also, I don't think the two metal parts are suppose to separate. I think they were pressed together from the factory. Probably need a new base if you can't find a way to firmly reattach the two.

On a positive note it would be a good time to upgrade to a window mounted autodim/homelink/temp/compass mirror.

It is a 1996 Land Cruiser. I thought that was an 80 series. Let me know if I am on the wrong board. I will pop off the cover tonight and look for screws. Thank you all for your help.

Pictures of my 1996 Land Cruiser.

Sunroof control and light are further back from the metal mirror connector thing. I will take a better picture and post it.

Here is a better picture showing the sunroof control and the light.

It looks to me like the metal thing goes inside the rear view mirror and must be bigger than the space so it holds the mirror up to the headliner. See the picture of the mirror below. I am going to unscrew the two screws tomorrow and try to reinstall the mirror. Does anyone know of any issues with removing the screws? Are they just screwed into the headliner or do I need to remove the headliner because there are bolts or something on the other side. Any help is appreciated.

LOL. Your pictures were so macro.
There are captive nuts behind the headliner in the roof sheetmetal. The entire interior can be disassembled with a Phillips screwdriver and a 14mm socket.
Personally, I would pick up a used mirror and be done with this.
