Great news....now I can have a wipe-able surface for my tailgate when I get deer blood on it instead of just waiting for it to dry tan/brown on carpet that is there now. :D :D :D :D
That's just great! And to think that I was worried the 100 guys wouldn't use their truck like, well, trucks.

PM me if you need any advice on the area.
Thanks Oregon, did some good exploring back in 09, crisscrossed the state a few times to get my bearings. We're just trying to zero in on something now (jobs obviously have a bearing on that. :p)

Sounds like you need a road (and off-road) tour of the entire west to really look at all your options!

:hhmm:
That's what we've been doing for the last 6 years! We've been able to get in a pretty good trip every year with that very objective in mind. Our top choice would probably be ID, every trip we tend to spend more and more time there, but job options have been limited, things are tough everywhere, but there are more things available to us in OR, and it's still close to ID, CO, UT, AZ, etc for exploring (when compared to our current location anyway )

The good news for the 100 guys it that since I probably wont find a job right off I'll be doing WagonGear and other fabrication stuff full time for awhile, should make for a short wait on the 'ol "list."

Pls move to san jose or any norcal city so we can have some kind of landcruiser gear company here, you can use my hundy for test fitments:D

Hey Kevin,

I was cleaning the back of my truck the other day and thinking about this. The set plate on my truck takes a beating. And since this part seems to be holding this up... Why not make a replacement set plate the works with the gate parts you have already fabbed up? It would be more durable then what we have and you KNOW it would work for you the way you want....

I am sure the 100 guys would pay the extra....

Just a thought.

Hey Spress!
I want to keep the "set plate", but that is what needs to be tested, I have no idea how it is going to interact with the new parts.
As for the spring;

Just posted this in the 100 lid thread in my vendor forum as well, but wanted to let everyone here know:

The prototype lid is bolted in the tailgated and wrapped up waiting for a ride out to Nevada for my crack test team to give it a shot.
Hopefully we will have some real-world photos soon and we can get the project underway.

Nope, norcal's not going to happen, but southern OR might, not too long of a drive, and a pretty one at that.
We want to move out of NY, and not into the other NY. :p

I've been considering that and I'm pretty sure I'll get that going as an option eventually, but I would REALLY need the 100 on hand to get that all sorted out so it will have to wait till we are closer to a few more trucks.
I was thinking that beat up beige plastic is going to detract from the sexy look of my lid anyway. :princess:

The other thing to keep in mind is that I like the theory of the set plate, think it's a nice component and I want to make sure my lid works well with it, but I'm 100% positive that my lid will be all set for those trucks that don't have a set plate.
We will see how they play together soon though.

Shouldn't be a problem, I don't like when it gets over 60. :p
(seriously)

Beautiful area though, I've gotten to do quite a bit of exploring in southern AZ, and there is so much more to see.
Really looking forward to visiting in the spring time, haven't been down there when things are in bloom.

I need one now. Let's get it going.
Any idea on how much this will cost us?

This is actually edited and expanded from an email I sent earlier today:

It looks like the design of the 100 lid works just fine,
The lids should basically be ready to go. However, I'm STILL dragging my feet a bit.

As you guys know, the second prototype is out in NV right now and has been test fit with basically no issues, the design appears to be finished pending a couple tiny adjustments, but I have not seen the fit personally and that has me worried.
I trust the two guys that played with the proto, but I'm still not comfortable sending something out that I have not FULLY reviewed and tested myself, just makes me nervous.

Anyway, I've been thinking that I will do an initial run of 5 100 lids and offer them up as beta versions for adventurous folks, or those in a hurry.

There are about 30 names in the 100 folder of folks interested in lids and they would have first dibs on a test batch (with some other conditions).

As of right now it looks like the 100 lids use almost exactly the same amount of material and the same fabrication effort as the 80 lids.
The only thing left to check is whether I will be able to get the same yield from the sheet metal since the 100 has the little wings on the gate edge.
For the time being, the price structure will be the same as the 80 lids (which is still way too damn expensive).

And, these initial lids will not be discounted, they will be full price, but also fully guaranteed like all my other stuff.

Also, I am going to be selective as to who can get them, basically I am going to need individuals who are fairly competent wrenches who are also capable of figuring out most of the installation for themselves (with lots of my support) since I also don't have comprehensive instructions yet. (with no truck to instal in it's hard to get the photos needed). :-b

Which brings me to the next point, I also would prefer folks with a good presence here on Mud so that we can get a collection of photos and installation issues posted up for everyone to learn from.

The only advantage for the buyer in this case is the chance to be the coolest kid on the block by getting a lid faster than everyone else, and the security in knowing that the price can only go up from here. :p

Thoughts?

And a couple photos sent to me from the boys in NV:

I sent the basic version of the latch out to test the possible interference with the set plate, and there was a bit of one.
The plate caught on the edge of the latch.

The easy solution to this problem is that I am going to push the stainless latches for the 100s.
They have a smooth transition to the surface that will let the set plate slide right over them.
Not to mention they are the top of the line super-slick latch, since hundys are the the super-slick cruiser, it only seems natural. :p

(the other way around this it to rout out a recess for the standard latch if anyone really wants to run them, but that's a pain in my arse)

Other than that we are concerned that the set plate might rattle since it rides on a hard surface now, easy fix with some stick on furniture type padding to the leading edge of the plate, but I am putting together something hopefully a little more secure.

The only thing I will add to Kevin's words ^^^: The installation of this compartment door will eliminate the torsion spring that assists in raising and lowering the tail gate. Not saying its a negative per se but just want everyone to realize that up front.

I was truly amazed how much internal space there is in the 100 lower gate! I haven't really inspected the 80-Series lower gate internal volume for comparison but, again, I was impressed with the 100's.

Yup you will loose the spring and you will also get a much heavier tailgate in the same move.

Then when you start loading stuff in it you will have to deal with even more weight...... :p
I will say that you get used to the initial extra weight very quickly, how much you add afterwards is up to you.

Kevin: One question I forgot to ask you: Do you recommend some type of closed cell foam pad (or???) glued to the inside of the tailgate to reduce/eliminate the chance of dings from internal cargo rolling/banging around?

Is there a functional reason to have the hinge at the top?

Kevin will splain it...just like he did to me when I asked that question a few weeks ago . But the hinge would also interfere with the set plate...

This is looking great! You need to make sure that whomever the Lucky 5 are.... that at least ONE of these is at CM11 for us other 100 guys to drool over and play with....

Lot of folks have been worried about that, but it has not been a problem.
All that I recommend is to line the gate with some nice bright sound damping material. That protects the metal, keeps things quiet and (most importantly) cleans and brightens up the black hole so it's easier to find things.
When it comes down to it, it take a lot of force to actually dent the metal from the inside, and most things that can dent it are too heavy to practically carry in the gate, stick to the soft and light things.

Naw, I'm tired of explaining it.
It just works better that way.

Check the FAQ on it here:

There is also a FAQ on the sound damping.
