Rear tailgate storage?

Somebody was nice enough to send me a link to this thread to explain all my new emails......

Do they make one of these for the 100 series?
"They" would be me in my garage. :p
And I'm working on it!

I'm thinking not possible on the 100 due to part of the tail lights being located in the tail gate...
The lights are a concern, but even with the space they take up there is still more room than the 80 gates and the 80 gates have WAY more room than the 60 ones.
The lights don't effect the structure at all, but I worry about them getting abused from the inside, any shield for them would really cut into the flexibility of the storage though.

I'm digging his new side window project more than the rear tailgate storage. I wish he would make something like that for the 100. Easy access to the cargo area when you have a rear bumper with swing-outs!
These I am working on, but not for the 100 yet, still need to get the 60 ones sorted out and then moving to other series should not be too much of a problem.
I will say that I freakin love these things!

FYI: I sent Kevin my old lower 100 gate to use for mock up purposes a year ago. Like most things 'squeaky parts get the grease'; barrage him with e-mails and I bet he moves it from the back-burner to the front ;)
Dan!
I have some photos I've been meaning to send you, need a few more measurements.
I'll post them here instead so some of these other 100 folks can pull a bit of their own weight as well. :D

And enough with the "squeaks"!
I'm working on it, all the time I have to spend answering 100 series emails is less time to spend working on the 100 series lid! :p (I type slow)

I received an email back from Kevin. Please everyone ping him on the tailgate storage and flip up windows.
See my comments above! I type slow!

Maybe Kevin will figure out a way but his first concerns were whether or not "we'd" be able to live without: The torsion bar that aids in lift assist of the gate as it occupies space within the tailgate; and the plastic 'bridge' that bridges the gap between the body and the tailgate. 60's and 80's have neither issue ;)

Don't know that either is a deal breaker but I do like the plastic bridge as it saves me from having to pick up all sorts of crap I would otherwise drop through the crack
Torsion bar, I'm still not sure about, but when it comes down to it, these lids and the heavy stuff you put in them make the tailgate heavy anyway, tough luck.
Start working out your forearms now and don't complain or I'll bring all the pink-panty jokes back into vogue. :flipoff2:

The "set plate" though, that I like and I want to keep it.
Interfering with the opening of the storage door is not an issue, but making sure it doesn't catch on the hardware of the lid when the tailgate itself opens and closes is a problem.
Right now I plan to have little runners that can be put on if you still have (and want to keep) the plate, I think it's a really nice feature and would like to accommodate it.

I think that's about it, Dan has been a big help with the project so far, I'm attaching a few photos that show some more measurements I need to check.
Feel free to help me out with the numbers I show here instead of flooding my inbox.

I need the dimension at the top of the tailgate from weatherstrip to weatherstrip, with the tailgate closed like I show here (if this were a 100)

I also need the dimension from the top edge of the tailgate to the top edge of the set plate like I show here (if there were a set plate in this picture). I need this dimension with the tailgate open and with the tailgate closed.

And here's a shot of a recent template, things are still in the masonite phase:

You guys can just feel free to drop a 100 off at my house if getting the dimensions are too much of a hassle, I'll probably be able to get things done faster that way.

Kevin it's nice to see the hundy template. I'm sure the only reason my 80 sold was it had one your prototypes in it. If your starting a (100 series) waiting list, put me down please.

I went and popped in the bridge for ya and took some measurements. I'm taking my truck west in a few weeks but i'd be up for a weekend trip to come help iron out some measurements/fitments using my truck.

Measured from the very top like you asked(i didnt realize it at first) from edge of weatherstripping to edge of weatherstripping looked to be 53.5"

Email sent! Cant wait for these to be available!

Kevin, the 100 series rear windows don't sit in a frame like the 60/80 series do. They sit/float on the seal/weather strip. I think that might make it easier to design something for the 100. If you really want something simple, you can hinge it to open to the side instead of up and use the existing hinge points.

David - Good call. Also the back attachment point could be the lock. Up would be better but out would be much easier with how the 100 is configured.

So what weekend is good for you? ;)
You can drop the truck off at any time, I should only need it for about a year. :D
The best timing would be for an actual prototype instal if you are up for that, would mean cutting in front of spress, but I think he might be able to be convinced on the benefit of that if I make an example of someone else's tailgate before he has to jump in with both feet. :hhmm:
It would be after the weather warms up a bit though.

I didn't realize you had sold, that's too bad. Let the new owner know that I will have a nice (affordable) latch upgrade next month for those original ones you had.
Drop me an email and I'll put it in the 100 folder.

i love the idea and want to be on "the list"
Same as above, I don't want to have to maintain yet another list, send me a quick note so I can put it in the folder.
I might only write a couple words back, but I'll let you know I got it.

looks like ih8mud auto-rotated my pictures, sorry bout that.
No problem, that shows just what I need, thanks a bunch, I'll make the updates!

Up is the only way to go! Go big or go home basically.
The structure differences with the 100 should actually improve things, but it doesn't really change the hardware issues, primarily an inside/outside lockable access latch.

Yep and possibly get away with not having to drill holes or glue hinges. Just use the existing hardware attachment points.
These should be a bolt in affair, even with the one I have in my truck, there is no drilling or modifications needed, I would plan to keep it that way.

Tailgates are WAY closer though.

Well then you can just send it to spress and we can fight over it at his place because come summer time I'll be in Reno.

These and a set of AT drawers should make my storage issues disappear.

Slice and dice on Loud's :D...I'll take the 2nd pole position if its a better position :grinpimp:

Thanks for volunteering Loud!

Thanks! Adjusted for the new dimensions over the weekend, just about to send another test template to be cut.

Also want to check the lower weatherstrip location, how about doing this image again:

But pulling the set plate back and getting the dimension from the weatherstrip to the top-center of the gate (with the gate closed obviously).

This is helping move things along a bunch since I don't have to wait to be around a 100 to check on this stuff (there aren't many cruisers around here).

Hurry up and move to the Pacific NW, they are a dime a dozen around here! :D

Boise is a good home. Got loads of 100s around here!

There are 100 owners on ih8mud that are up his way too, but they dont post much. I'll check tonight and see if there are any near you that could go by for you to measure up.

Would the factory carpet help? It sits right up close to the weatherstripping on all sides.

Would the factory carpet help? It sits right up close to the weatherstripping on all sides.

If you have one available, I'll certainly use it!
Part of the problem is that Dan did some pretty serious sound-proofing on the tailgate I have and he overlapped the weatherstrip edge in some places. Getting an accurate fit is important since if I get the rubber edge trim of the tailgate up against the very edge of the factory weatherstrip it effectively makes a double seal and helps isolate noise even more. This will prove effective in another 10 years when the 100 seals start to compress and wear out like our 60 and 62 seals have.

As far as any 100 guys in the area, send them my way. But I will say that I have sold a grand total of 3 tailgates to people in this state out of the 100 or more that I've made (and those three people don't really want to be here either).
It takes a "special" kind of person to want to cut a hole in their tailgate to install a utilitarian door panel that will gain them a tiny bit more storage space.
Those kind of cruiser owners don't tend to be around here. I would say that 95% of all the panels I've sold have gone to CA, OR & WA.
Oddly enough none of them have gone to ID that I can think of.....
