Thoughts, if you wanted a hatch to carry the load of a spare tire and the hatch, this could be upwards of 150lbs total (my spare Xterrain on a steel rim is at least 75lbs), and a top hinge would be carrying a LOT a weight. Hatch would be heavy to lift / hold.

This all started when i had to replace my old rear hatch struts........holding that hatch up was a BEAR! it had to be over 70lbs and that was attached still with the two hinges carrying alot of the weight im sure.

Just a wild ass guess--but i imagine that the replacement struts were roughly 50lbs of lifting force. I dont see why adding another 25lbs each would be hugely aggregious and still fire the spare tire up like a stock hatch.

Have you seen the Fiberglass rear hatch replacement ( french I think ) I would gravitate that way for weight savings.
Get their hood and aft window blanks while your at it..

Good luck with your plan I would'nt do it but to each their own....

yeah! saw those- pretty neat- but much $$$.

This seems like alot of work when contemplating structural integrity which id prefer not to mess with too much. The cruiser is always getting complements on how few interior rattles it has............it would be a shame to have it rattle itself to death due to a structural blunder on my part.

I like the idea, I look forward to seeing more.

those poly body parts on the french site are nifty.
But... is this just a weight thing? or are people getting corrosion problems on the hood?
sorry for the hijack

I don't see an advantage to a one-piece rear hatch. For gear hogs, which most 80 owners are, having to open the hatch as a one-piece means all your loose junk spills out on the ground. the tailgate makes a perfect seat for pulling off ski boots or a makeshift kitchen and workbench. The hatch is a decent rain canopy. For camping inside the 80, opening the hatch while keeping the tailgate up is a great option.

Did anyone catch the pop-up roof tent that's installed on the French 80? Where does one get something like that? (and does anyone have the link for the french site?
