Rear Differential Fluid Change

Anybody know the part # for the rear diff's drain plug and fill plug? Can't find it in the history of this thread, if mentioned.

EDIT: nvm, found it drain plug 9034118040 here. And fill plug 90341-A0002 here. Correct me if that's wrong.

Was pleased to find my brand new Kobalt torque wrench (3/8" drive, 20-100 ft-lb) is either faulty or was never calibrated. On the 20 ft-lb setting I was able to tighten my LC's lugnuts and the wrench never clicked. Back to Lowes I go....:bang: The result of the faulty torque wrench was that I started to round the head of the drain plug and the fill plug a bit. They still come off, so that's fine, but I'm going to replace them now before they get too tight in there.

how do you remove the fill plug if it's rounded off?????
Use the search function.....it is a subject that has been covered a couple hundred times.

Different ways to do it. But ALWAYS remove the fill plug BEFORE removing the drain plug.

I went this route so I didn't have to worry about rounding off that drain bolt on a rock:

Got it fixed today. Got the fill and drain plug from the dealer, and got my faulty torque wrench replaced. All happy. Thanks all
 
So here it is 18 1/2 years later from when @jp213a made this post. I do the entire job, drove it afterwards and came inside to wash up. I feel a bit more secure having changed the fluid from whatever was in there to the nice clean GL-5 Amsoil gear lube. Decided to look if there are any detailed tutorials and found this terrific post and its subsequent additions…. Looks like it got it right. Front gets done tomorrow

EDIT; tomorrow is here and I finished the front of the FJ40 and both front and rear on the BJ-55. Used up over 2 1/2 gallons of GL-5 gear oil between the two. Looks like a huge difference in color alone

Is this ok gear oil to use to replace the front and rear differentials? Also I know they’re different brands but will it be ok to mix? I have 4 quarts is that enough to do front and rear?

That Valvoline squeeze bag makes the front dif fluid change SO MUCH EASIER!!! No pump needed. Used on my 2000 LC. I like royal purple, but that doesn’t come in a squeeze bag yet. Unfortunately.

Total game changer. No muss or fuss with messy pumps. Transfer any remaining fluid to a surviving pouch to avoid wasting the smallest amount. I almost look forward to fluid changes.

this guy annoyes the hell out of me but this video explains what to use

bsically GL-4 for manual transmission GL-5 for differentaials and Transfercases
 
This is your friend:

I actually use mine for transmission fluid and have a DIY one built out of PVC pipe that I use for gear oil (to avoid having to clean it and not cross-contaminate fluids). Fill it with the proper amount of fluid, put the line in your diff, pressurize, and then open the valve. All of the fluid is in within a few minutes.

Great channel, but too much of an OE-fluid evangelist. My rig is doing just fine with Delvac 75w90 in the T case, 80w90 conventional in the diffs, and MaxLife ATF in the trans.

The internet + fluid talk = hell hole.

Delo ESI in my diffs and Delvac in my t-case. Sorry, AMD.

I disagree with his recommendation to run AGM batteries in Toyotas or Lexii not set up with that charge profile.

But I would use him for my service if for some insane reason I lived in Chicagoland.

I actually do like the AGM batteries, but have a voltage booster in my glovebox :). I ran it for long enough to fry some of my cheap LED bulbs, then pulled it back out.

AMD and I do share our adoration of the 2UZ-FE and hesitation for buying OE parts on Amazon or eBay that are likely fakes.

I saved a bag…when I baselined the LX, Mobil1 was $3/qt cheaper than Valvoline, so I bought the Mobil1 and transferred it with the Valvoline bag!
