Wow!! THanks everybody for the great pics and ideas. I didn't think i would be the only one out there with this issue. I will post up my progress as it comes a long. It has to be ready for wheelin this summer so i have to get it done soon.

I think i am going to try to keep it stock and like those replacement parts so my rear gas tank will still work fine. We will see how it all comes together.

hey cruiser cruisin. dont know what year your cruiser is ? but i have a complete frame from a 70 or 71 thats yours if you want it ? i dont have a tittle but if you just want to cut it up for parts i dont care. just remove it from my yard and its yours! my wife is tired of the lawn ornaments i have and its time to start spring cleaning. it has a half ass power stering plate on it too from the PO you can PM me for info if interested. i am just south of granite falls out at lake bosworth.

Sorry it is not yet mounted, well it is sitting on the truck but I am still fabricating the rear of the tub/truck. The tub is bent and positioned but I am still planning how I am going to fill the gap between the crossmember and the tub. My entire rear tub is fabricated from 10 gauge sheet steel. Lights are going to be up on the rear quarter panel out of the way.

I am building it for rock crawling so the only thing stock in the rear of the truck is the frame and it is now boxed and has a new crossmember. Suspension is 4 link in the rear.

Yes I think it is 1/4 steel. It is C channel I picked up from the steel yard - 4 inches I think. The diagonal pieces are the same but 3 inch.

I would be happy to take any other pics you might find useful. I'm trying to take pics along the way for an eventual build thread if I get around to it. I wanted this thing on the trail 2 summers ago but you all know how that goes......:D

That is excellent.
Is that 1/4"
And do you have a pic of it mounted on the truck with lights?
Please post more pics, if you have them.

Looks good Ewheeler, I almost went that route with the rectangle steel but the stuff I had in the garage was too large. The C channel was cheaper and it matched the original fairly well so I went with it. :meh:

Thanks for the response Kent,
You will have no problems with your truck..I like the way you mounted the hitch. I have seen few crossmembers twested and cracked, because the hitch is mounted below the crossmember with no supports.
Hope to see your build soon.

Wow what a great offer. Thanks man however mine is a 78. I have a beautiful 78 parts cruiser sitting in the yard and thought about using the frame off of it however the time it will take for me to swap everything over; sm chev, power stearing, shackle reversal, AA t case cross member, is just to much. This thing has cost me to much money and it just sits so i am going to buy some parts and get it rollin as soon as i can. Maybe we can go wheelin sometime this summer? Always looking for some people around here to go with.

hey no problem! just trying to help a cruiser guy out and i didn't know what year yours was so i figured what the heck id offer it up plus the wife wants it gone and i get brownie points with her if it disappears. and as far as wheeling i wouldn't mind it either but i have to get mine up and running too. i almost had it running when we got that first big snow of the year and my shed collapsed on it. once all the snow and rain is over i will dig it out and finish up a couple things and have her back on the road (i hope)

I used a torch and big hammer. Grinding will work but isn't as fast. Maybe try a cut off wheel for your grinder if you don't have a torch or plasma cutter.

since were on this topic, does any body know any quick ways to get the bumper off? grinding and drilling is going very slow for me

I ground and drilled. It blew.

Might be worth your time to rent a torch if you don't have access to one. I just removed my crusty bumper and all those rivets after 30-45 min of torching and hammering with a BFH. Minimal grinding was involved.

vtcruiser, so basically heat the living piss out of the rivets and hit the hell out of it with a hammer til the rivet breaks?

Um.....no.

There are probably two ways, one the long way...the other the short way.

1. Get a grinder an a half dozen metal grinding discs and start grinding off the tops of the rivets. After the head is gone, you can drill out the center of rivet. Get a punch and start pounding the rivet back through the metal. That is the hard way.

2. Rent, borrow or steal an acetylene torch and burn the rivet heads off....then punch the remaining giblets back through the holes......much less time. There are probably other ways to burn the heads off....perhaps with an arc welder, plasma cutter, or such. I used a torch and made quick work of it.

Make sense?

I just finished this but only replaced the rear gussetts. The crossmember was 'good enough' for the time being and I didn't have the patience to remove the extra crossmember rivets while the body was still on.

I used a center punch on each rivet, drilled the rivet head, used a rivet chissel to pop off the top and then an air hammer to punch it through. Wasn't as bad as i thought it would be.

Before -

Gussetts removed and POR'd -

After (bolted up with grade 8 bolts)
