I ended up with this extra spring I cant remember where it goes, any ideas (10/72 FJ40)? One end looks like it has broken off.

Its not really ringing a bell as a common body or engine part. Could this have perhaps been around one of your
hoses allowing it to bend without collapsing? I had some oddities like that that i managed to make disappear with
the correct part.

I have spent a lot of time searching the parts diagrams. I'm beginning to believe it is something I had laying around and it got mixed in with this project somehow.

I think that's the logical answer. If you want to know for sure, throw it away today; next week you will know what it is and need it.

I believe that looks like the spring that goes with the shift lever retention cap…

The flat ends look to be the same. Although the thickness of the spring looks to be different. The shift lever spring is very stiff and can’t really be compressed by hand. If your spring is soft and you can squeeze it with your hand it may be different or unrelated to the FJ
