rear bumper build saturday

chris/red cruiser is coming down and we are starting to make a rear bumper for hiss 62
basic design 1/4" plate with 3.5"x3/4 recovery points that will also be the mounting brackets
i had the 3/4 plate cut to 14" in length at the steel yard ($4. for each cut,well worth it)
have 5"x1/4 plate for the top and facing piece

well keep you posted later and take plenty of pics(i'll make that chris's job )

Tired of me just hanging around while welding and grinding, eh?

Figured I'd do some work on the front bumper too now that I have it.

Eventually (as cash allows) this rear bumper will hold my spare, etc. It's time for Jim to expand his craft and add bumpers to his product line

well, i took a few pics today, but i cant figure out how to down size them for mud

i can do it no problem at work, but cant figure it out here at home.

it has tuned out bettter than expected and both chris and i are very pleased with what we've come up with.

thats a funny story thomas.

its mainly mounted by the 3/4" recovery plates
when i picked the plate up at the steel yard i had them cut to 14" not knowing how long they really needed to be.
eventually we re-cut them down to 9"
you'll see the notch we cut in the rear x-member to get the plate in the inside of the frame.

we are also still using the original brackets that we've cut the rivits out and are using the rivit holes for the mounting bolts.

because of "THE PLAN" which we never had.
i now cannot remove the bumper.
chris will be back down so we can cut some welds to be able to fix this

saturday/sundays pics

after removing the factory bumper, we had to make a notch in the x-member so the 3/4" plate would slide in the frame
using the factory bumper brkt holes you have to cut the heads off the rivits and punch them out.(sawsall works the best for this)
we unded up having to cut the 3/4" plate down to length,from 14" to 9"
we then counter sunk holes in the end of the plate so the plate would go over the rivits from the rear body mount.(i made the mistake of just counter sinking the holes, instaead of making a grove in the plate so the bumper would slide off the frame,that was sundays project )
drilled holes, cut 45's,tack welded plate, trimed off the ends of the bumper for a sleeker look
we spent about 8hrs on this saturday and a couple sunday fixing my mistake.

i've got eight pics of what we have done so far and as i finish this up in the next couple weeks, i'll post more.

Didn't want Jim to settle for building "just" a bumper so I just dropped off a spindle and a few other parts so he can add a spare tire mount.

chris is in hawaii visiting his son and has givin me a couple weeks to work on it, he did drop off a spindle to add a tire carrier to it before he left thanx chris! more work...

i will definitly update as soon as progress begins again.
