I searched - I Promise.

Bought the parts from CDAN to do the Rear Axle Re-pack. The FSM seems pretty straight forward except it lists a bunch of SST tools. Do I need anything special (like the 54MM I needed for the front)? I am thinking I need the SST for the lock nut (See below). Are there any other special tools I might need.

The link in the FAQ refers to a write-up by KlunkyChris that is no longer there. The pictures are also mssing as well.

Just want to make sure I have what I need before I tear into it. Based on the pre-load, I believe I should wait to get the SST.

The below is from a thread about rear axle pre-load,:

The Haynes manual says to adjust the preload
"Install the brake disk and hold it in place with 2 lug nuts. TIghten the locknut to 43 ft lbs while rotating the hub ass. to seat the bearings. Back off the locknut just untill it can be turned by hand" and so on.
Is this what you are talking about with the SST?

Kurt,
On the FF rear axles the locknut is round so there is no way to torque it with any type of normal wrench, socket, channel locks, etc. The locknut has 3 holes in the outer surface. The SST has 3 prongs that go into these holes.

Here is a fuzzy image but you'll get the idea. Borrowed the pic from the OTC tools web site.

So Based on this alone, I assume I need to get the SST. With the SST, can I set the pre-load via the method Landtoy80 described, or do I need a tension gauge.

Thanks

You'll need the sst but preload is a little more vague. The reason is once you set the preload you then "adjust" the nuts position so the locking washer will line up to the nut and allow the screws to enter the nut.

You might want to have a hand impact around to get those philips scrfews out. I've always used an impact but you might be able to use just a screw driver. I think it's a #3 tip.

You don't have to have it, but it will make your life easier.

Romer...don't know if you've done the job yet or are about to, but if you want, I'd be happy to ship out the SST to you after I'm done with it Monday...you can use it and mail it back when you're done...Rook2 and I will need it on Monday and I can easily send it out Tuesday AM...

Drop a PM if you are interested.

Best.

Bear--

That'll work for the wheel lug, but you need the SST (or something that you might be able to mock up) to get anywhere once you have the wheel off.

Dan sells them for about $52 IIRC. He gets to feed his dogs, you get a useful tool.

Best.

Thanks for the offer. Let me see if someone in my club has one I can borrow first. I appreciate it and I may take you up on it.

Ken

Let me know any lessons learned you might have. Since the FAQ link refering to the write-up is gone and the pics in the FAQ are gone, I'm sure Junk would add a new write-up to the FAQ.

Thanks Again

Ken I've got one too. I'll be back on the 28th if you still need one.

Just stumbled on this thread, Ken I've got the SST also and only about one hour from you so if you want it, its yours to use, I wont be doing the rear axle service for a while at least. HTH.

Romer, I looked in the garage today. No frickin clue where it is. On the positive side, I found lunch from early November and there was still some left.

If ya'll put together a new write up, post it up and we'll include it into the faqs.

We built one down at the shop for David's 60 FF.

Just some plate with 4 smooth bolts and a 1/2" adapter welded to it.

Yes please start thread and post gazillion pics........ :flipoff2:

I won't be able to post them till I get back to Akron later this week (Saturday).

I upload 'em then.

Pretty straight forward job. Much easier than the front axle service. A few things to note here and there, but other than that, if you've done the front, the rear will be a cinch.

I'm looking forward to the pics and tips guys. Simon and I plan to tackle this in early April and it would be nice to refer to others experiences.
