Rear auto locker: Why not? (1 Viewer)

Holy cow! Those pics of that diff are impressive. Was not expecting it to be that beefy. Big old spring and 4 pinions. Definitely changes my opinion on them. Still getting the itch for a true locker though. Those Harrops have my attention. LandCruiserSpecialists here in Austin are going to be a vendor and already have 5 scheduled for install on 100s. Should get really good feedback from them.

Yeah, the LSD is a stout unit (in its construction), but it remains....spring pressure and friction discs will lose their effectiveness over time. But more importantly, I want to have the option to 'select' when I have a traction aiding device operate.

Keep me updated on what you hear from LCS. I grew up in Austin, went to school there and most of my family still lives there. I am equipped to set up my own diff, but it would be so much more convenient to drop off the LX at LCS and have them do it...while in Austin visiting.

Will do for sure. I think the first install is next week. I want a selectable locker for the same reasons you mention.

I sent LOKKA an email and this was there response. Im on the fence...either a winch plate and winch or a rear auto locker which i have always wanted. For the price i want the rear locker. These are the part numbers on their website, but the guy tells me they dont have a rear. So is he saying they are out of stock? The website says thats its 4 weeks out...so maybe im miss reading his email[?].

They have not returned my inquiries after two days of emails. Anyone else have any luck contacting and getting and getting a solid answer that these do fit a 2001 US spec LC?

Thank you RJ,

The rear is an open dif. How will affect the full time 4x4 drivability? I only want the rear for now. Unless there is a greater benefit to do front Lokka.

I daily drive my cruiser so I need to take this into account.

Hi Carlos,
Thank you for your email about lokka.

Did you want to fit Front or Rear Lokka?
If you want to fit the front, then you need to convert the vehicle to Part Time 4x4.
There are a lot of advantages of doing the conversion anyway, let alone being able to fit a front Lokka.

There is no centre diff after the conversion.... the centre diff gears are removed.....it is these gears that make the front drive parts move ALL the time. The conversion is performed to stop the front parts moving altogether.

After conversion, only the rear drives, until you use the diff lock mechanism/switch in the transfer case to engage the front shaft. (the factory lock mechanism is not inside the centre/transfer case diff, it is right at the front of the transfer case and simply locks the front output shaft to the front half of the centre diff case). Once 'locked' the front 'side gear' in the centre diff cannot turn, so all the other diff gears are also fixed relative to the case and the two tailshafts are effectively locked together. We simply use this existing mechanism to get drive through the centre diff case to the front tailshaft after the conversion.

Saves between 14 -16% fuel useage (according to almost everyone that has taken any notes and reported back to us), limits wear on all front end components - particularly the CV joints, boots and axle flanges, substantially reduces the drive line backlash most noticeable with rapid acceleration followed by deceleration or poor clutch pedal control on manual vehicles. Makes a much smoother more economical vehicle out of 100 Series vehicles.
And provides the opportunity to fit the auto diff lock into the front diff.

The alternative is to fit a manual locker (air locker). The cost of parts alone is far greater (locker and compressor etc) plus fitting. Then you have the problems of air lines under the vehicle, pressure loss inside the diff housing and limited steering when engaged.
With the Part Time Conversion you have all the advantages of the auto locker (for off-roading) with the benefits of the part time conversion - virtually at no cost (as air locker much greater cost than the auto locker) - which are 15% better fuel economy, no wear and tear on front end components, smoother driveline. Fuel savings alone will cover the cost of conversion.

Our Lokka's are AUSTRALIAN made, they come with a 3 year UNCONDITIONAL unlimited km warranty.
Comprehensive Fitting Instructions included. The differential gear set does not have to be re-set and the carrier bearings are not replaced, so its a pretty simple fit for the mechanically inclined.
Warranty is the same no matter who does the fitting.

For the Rear, does it have the factory LSD axle or the standard open centre?

kind regards
RJ

Hello,

I have read through your FAQ and testimonials. And i have tried to make sense of which product is right for me. I am not 100% which LOKKA is right for my vehicle.

My LandCruiser is full time 4x4 with IFS and rear axle.

Can you kindly recommend which product will fit my cruiser?

Not sure if these are the right ones?

TOY-RL-946
TOY-RO-945

Thanks!

Carlos

I also sent and inquiry and basically got back a response that the rear locker for the open carrier isn't ready at this time, and they cannot guarantee the 4 week lead time listed on the web site currently. I got a general time frame guidance of "months". So, in the works apparently, but not quite ready yet...

Finally got a response. Why post part numbers that are compatible? Any other options besides air/electric lockers?

Not including a axle from ‘98.

Correct.
Sorry

Winch over locker. Invest in recovery gear before adding your locker. Many more uses for winch, and your buddies with out winches will thank you & owe you beers when you pull them out if the swamp.
