These were port added so not sure there is a true standard. I have one 25 here in town that might have the holes and one up north I can check. My white 25 had the holes filled in. These were Stratolite reflectors with a steel housings.

Looks like #16 didn't have reflectors (third picture). Have a couple of early FJ40 to check.

I uploaded pictures but they didn't take.:bang: Let me try it again.:meh:

Thank's Ige and John, Looks like it does not matter much, anyone else that can hold up a tape measure to a known point. And LITP awhile ago you or Jim or even Phil had a home made rear tail light bracket light fix, I can not locate it. Help Thank's, John

I said tail light bracket, meant to say license bracket, Sean that was the post I was thinking of. I'll give you a call later today, Thank's, John

Hi John, here are the measurements off my 59. Measurements taken from bottom of fender, from inside rear bed opening, the side reflector measurement was taken from the seam just behind the drivers door opening. hope that makes sense.
Glad to hear that you started working on your Cruiser again, I finally got started on mine yesterday. Good luck

License plate bracket holes. The distance between the bracket holes is about 4 7/16", center to center. Other measurements in photos.

Happy birthday john P. :)

X2 Happy Birthday John.

Won't say John P because your were John P the third. #2 has been MIA for many years not to mention the fact he wasn't even the owner of the 25.

I can get you the measurements off the 62 tub and grey one if you like but not sure how accurate they were at the docks when these were installed. Hard to tell from the pictures of the white and green hard top but the screw holes are on the top and bottom not side to side like the others.

Ah, so those reflectors were installed in the USA. My (PA) 62 does not have any rear or side reflector and it looks like it never had any.

But they are in the parts manual, well, at least in the 65 manual I have. How can that be explained?

I guess it's possible some slipped thru customs in the US without having them installed. But pretty easy to explain why they are in the parts manual. Around 64 these were installed in Japan using Koito reflectors. Earlier cruisers here were port installed using US made reflectors. So once they were being installed on production a part was issued. Anything Toyota offered their US dealers like Ramsey winches, Eaton heaters, Husky hubs and soft top was not issued a Toyota part number.

Old thread, but new question:

Do I notice correct that the reflector location is lower on the early FJ40's compared to the FJ25? Could someone make measurements for an early 40? Nuclearlemon maybe? Also should the be blank or body color?

Paul.

Not sure there is a 100% correct location for these reflectors until they were being made my Koito and installed in Japan. In post three in this thread the fourth and fifth picture I posted are both early FJ40s. The hard is (picture 5) is a 61 and the other a 62. You can see the holes on the 61 are top and bottom instead of side to side. These were added in the US at port to meet DOT requirements. The reflectors were made in the USA. Seen a couple different manufacturers. I have a third early FJ40 that had the reflectors still intact when I got it. The housing were aluminum and not painted. I find it hard to believe any of them would have been painted to match the body. My grey FJ25 is the only 25 I've purchased that hadn't been repainted at least once. It had a few reflectors with a steel body that were grey but believe that is how Toyota got them and just drill holes and bolted them on at the port. I also seen nuts & bolts used as well as just sheet metal screws. Think it was just a matter of when and which port it came in. The two pictures I mentioned the location doesn't look that much lower. First couple of pictures in my post show why on the left back it had to be that high to clear the license plate. Probably why the height they used was determined to begin with.

So it is : Just put them where you like. Annie has them lower then your 25 i think. Hard to see on your 1962. Vertical is also an option. But later fj40's have them horizontal, I think I like that more.

Originally we had none but reflectors are required to meet inspections. We got a nice pair of old reflectors from fjfjfj with a steel bezel. We'll put one on the spare wheel carrier (behind the hubcap;)) and have to choose the right spot for the left one.

I agree they probably should be blank, not painted. We'll have them plated. Thanks.

I don't like the look of the top and bottom mounting holes myself was just showing that at least one came that way. On the 62 if you look above the white square from a old sticker you can see the mounting holes which do look lower. As for the reflector on the spare tire carrier my early 68 FJ40 has screws and nuts filling a couple of holes that I believe match later reflector with studs off the back. Can't remember if I even checked it to be sure. US seem to be one of a few markets that Toyota imported every FJ40 with hub caps until the 81 model. Would make sense for other markets without hub caps to have a reflector mounted in the spare. Starting with the 68 model the US had reflectors just inside the tail lights on the rear frame member. Pretty sure those reflectors are still available new from Toyota. Wouldn't be period correct for a 62 but might be a clean option for you if your required to have one on the right side. What every you use just be sure it fits inside the center hole in the wheel which should be a problem. After the FJ25 the spare tire carrier had washers welded on by the wheel studs. Never understood the reasoning for this. Looks like they made it too short for the wheel and that was fix. But if that was the case would have thought a correction would have been made and drop the welded washer after the first batch was gone. Maybe it was for a little clearance for reflector mounting flange and heads on the mounting screws.:meh:

My newest FJ25 has what looks like a home made adapter to mount the wiper vacuum wipers. Threaded holes in the windshield are factory just don't match. Not sure why. May have been at the end of the 25 run and ran out of windshields made to use vacuum wipers and use one of the electric wiper windshields to finish it up for US market. Believe all FJ25s imported to the US mainland had vacuum wipers. They is a early style TNK electric wiper used in other markets including Hawaii.
