I have some light rust that I'd like to tackle myself around the windshield from a bad install. It's light scale and it's been treated. No holes to contend with. I'd like to sand, treat, prime and repaint the a pillars, and scuff, prime and paint the roof while at it. local body guys around here suck and I’ve always found i can do a better job. I know the rattle can won’t hold up like catalyst paint, i was thinking of clear coating it with 2k catalyzed rattle can clear. Any thoughts?

How 'bout doing all the prep work yourself and having a local shop shoot it? I'm not down on rattle cans - I've painted entire vehicles, bumpers, etc - but on a 100 Series... I think I'd want to step it up a bit.
Check out paintscratch.com. Instructional videos and they sell color matched rattle cans. Worked well on my bumper. Should work great for pillars.

Every body guy I’ve used from my wife's 4runner to my classic ‘Cuda has SUCKED.... Dust in the paint, parts not even attached correctly, peeling clear coat, fisheyes, etc, etc. all these guys were supposed pro's with 20+ years of bodywork experience. I've been quoted $1600 to do the roof and pillars. One big issue, is that i cannot tell how they've pained the A pillars after the window and trim is reinstalled. Hence, 2 years later, I could be dealing with rust again because some "pro" didn't do the job I paid for. Like most things in life, I've found that I can do better at 1/8 of the price of a pro. Maybe I can get catalyzed 056 white spray paint made by a local paint store? Or, I can rent a compressor and paint it in my garage.
You can even roll it on if going DIY. I've read about people being happy with them since they settle/even out pretty good - besides, youre talking about painting areas you don't really see much anyways. I'd think you'll get better results than rattle can since you can get catalyst paint and better coverage. I believe the key factor is to wet sand very well
Rattle can it if you have any experience with spraying that way, and it sounds like you do. No one will see the roof, and like said above you can order color matched cans.

No, what are HB guns? When I looked at buying a compressor, dryer, guns, lines, etc, the cost was at least $1k for a package that wouldn't take a dump on itself after a few hours of work. Would 2k clear coat over dupli-color 056 white get me 90% of the way to a decent job that is solvent resistant? My worries is that the dupli-color clear won't hold up to washer fluid.

So, here is my plan: POR15 any rust, filler primer, epoxy primer, the rattle can base coat. I'll use 2k clear coat as it will hold up to UV light and any solvents. Everyone seems to think regular spray can paint will hold up fine, it's the clear that needs to be 2k. I'll post before and after photos.

Yes. I had my windshield replaced a few months ago. These guys were the BEST tradesmen I've ever had work on my car. The removed all the window poly, sanded down all the light rust scale, then primed it with rust inhibitor. I took pictures all the way through the process. I'll get a shop down the road to attempt to pull the glass for me w/o cracking it and I'll do all the body work and get that killer shop to reinstall. It just bums me out that I cannot find good body people.
harbor freight has a high volume low pressure gun/pump/fan system for under $100 that works really well... as long as you thin the paint correctly.... you can order a color/clear/hardener/thinner off ebay for about $200 a gallon ( a qt should do) mask everything and dampen the ground and walls and anywhere else dust might be and go at it...

That will slow but Longer term rust will surface if not complete removed. Most auto paint stores will put exact color match into spray can. Paint mixed for spray guns have a hardening catalyst added which yields the most desired outcome.

I totally agree. However, it's frustrating that every time I pay someone good $$, they cannot deliver what's been promised. I think if I take my time, remove or drop the headliner, I can get all the rust. The rattle can color shouldn't degrade if I apply 2k clear. Body shops just want fast turn around time and won't stand behind their work 70% of the time....
