That's kind of sad when the cost of an extended warranty pays for itself on a LC.

interesting observation.
but we got a very good deal on the warranty, not the usual scam, so that's part of it.
But yes, it has not been troublefree.

Reliable

I guess we all agree that the 100 is pretty reliable, it wouldn't leave you stranded in the middle of nowhere, unable to move.
But, my experience is that many details don't work as well as they could (compared to other toyo models)
So, reliability aside, and in addition to my current AHC problem, I have the following issues:
1
The auto-heating/ventilation/AC system is not as good as on some other vehicles in that the temperature doesn't keep that well, and the AC doesn't work well as a dryer in humid conditions, like it does with a manual AC or on cars with a humidity sensor. Also, there is an area of the top left of the windshield that the defroster doesn't clear well at all, just in front of my left eye.
2
The Cruise Control has a bit of the same problem as the temp.regulation, it wanders a bit to much. Trying to use the Cruise Control in low speeds (30 or 40 mil) in order to avoid speeding tickets is hopeless unless there are no hills.
3
The 4 speed Automatic is not as smooth and easy to learn the shift pattern of as many other cars
4
The height sensors for the AHC are protruding too much, too prone to damages. The rear one corroded inside, making the whole AHC go insane, and it took weeks to figure out what was wrong.
5
The velcro fastening of the back seats when stowed is really not much good at all. (One day I will get around to sewing on something better).

That's what I can remember today.
I think that maybe Toyota Motor Co. has gone further and chosen more advanced solutions than they normally do, on this model. But otherwise, it's a awesome machine.

Whadayathink?

It's a pity I sold my 80 because i heard it wouldn't be approved in my new home country. And that was even wrong.

I love my 100 and it has been very reliable through 50k mi - I have done nothing to it other than oil change and now I am in need of new tires.

I, however, do not think that it is NEARLY as heavy duty / field ready as my 1997 80 was. It was a tank.

The upside of the 100 is that the road manors are so much better than the 80 and the conveniences are much better.

I hate yoiu guys with reliable 100s. Mine left my wife stranded THREE times in six months of ownership!

7 or 8. 2000, 108k. It has been extremely reliable in the mechanical area, but...

Starting to see rust on the front of the hood and under the lift gate. Pisses me off! There aren't too many choices in my area to have body work fixed. When I was living in Minneapolis I never would have dreamed of bringing it to Maaco, but in South Texas there just aren't that many options. Under the lip of the lift gate looks like it needs to be taken off, all hardware removed, sand blasted and repainted. I'd like to address a couple of door dings while I'm at it. Any suggestions?

Other problems:
Antenna mast slightly bent.
Wiring Harness for the towing hitch is f****d up.
"D" Light in the dash.
Cruise control switch split in half.
Fog lamp shorted out.
Gold package fading.

reliability

I rate ours an 8 for reliability. Only a few problems and those seem to be generic i.e. starter contacts, cracked exhaust manifold, warped rotors, jammed 6-disc CD changer. Other than that, it's only required routine fluid & filter changes. Oh yeh, it goes thru brake pads a bit excessively for a vehicle that sees mostly highway miles & occasional towing.

I gave mine a "9" only because I blew up the front diff. It's still not an 80 or 60 series tank, but oh so much more comfortable and has V-8 power. And all those little things like antenna masts? I wouldn't even count those, but some must complain to be happy.

99 LC. Intermittent TPS failure twice. Alternator failure. Starter contacts. Cat converter rattles. Warped brake rotors( could be over torqued wheels), bad wind noise.
All before 66k.

A commander? Those butt ugly things? Nope. Bought the wife a EB Expedition and will wait till late winter and get an old Jeep Wrangler( cheap) for myself to play around in. I have to say, the Expedition is pretty nice for what its meant for. Hauling people.

For someone that had a black cloud over their LandCruiser, you sure do like to sit in here and bitch about it. Even AFTER you sold it. And how is that Expedition, we never seem to hear how perfect it is...
Ah :censor: , Now I started him up... I better move over to Schitt Chat

rule303- we've all heard of your horrible experience with your 100, and it was definitely informative in showing us that all makes have lemons. However, you've long since sold your 100 and moved on. I have to wonder why you hang around the forums just to retell the same story over and over again. Are you planning to buy another Landcruiser anytime soon? Or are you still upset about your experience and wanting to vent? Or do you just have way too much time on your hands? ;)

98k miles and doing great. Drivetrain clunk, o2 sensor, tailgate cables, trailer harness. Not bad considering miles. Oh and all the regular PM. But that doesn't count... Oh and I have rust under the back windows, very little but frustrating.

Voted an 8. I've had a couple of small problems with my 99, problems that I've never had with my 95, so that is my basis for the rating.

Would have voted 10 with the exception of two issues.

My '98 had the starter go out at 90K miles (known issue with the contacts)
and the multi-function display dying on my '04 with 40k on the clock, which would have cost me $5k if I didn't hav ethe extended warranty.

You guys with the broken tailgate cables: What conditions did they break under? I've overloaded the tailgate so bad I'm not even gonna say by how much and they haven't busted. I'm definitely gonna treat them differently after seeing that you guys have had them fail!!!
I had to replace one on my '98. It was so minor I didn't even count it as an issue.

Hmmm...

I might have to drop my rating down a notch after the failure of a fairly important engine part today... :frown:

Nahh...Its still VERY reliable !! :D

rating 10

My 98 was a used repo. The cats had been cut off in Texas. I had to do a little adjustment to the antenna, the lumbar does not work. I changed out the bumpers. I put the ARB with warn winch up against any Boston cab on the road.
I love it. But I moved up from a very very tired 64 FJ40. Its nice not to have to keep a wall paper scraper on the front seat to defrost the windows.

too early to rate--expecting to give it a 10 some day

'98 used with 29k miles; owned it 2 mos--love it, love it, love it! As some may recall, I had a battery/starter issue a month ago--replaced battery with Optima and have been solid since (temp hasn't been below 40 degrees either)

Both my 01 LC and 01 LX have been very reliable. Maintenance expenses have been the primary expenses on both. Had 65K on the LC and have 63K on the LX. Maintenance expenses are about the same as many other vehicles - oil & fluid changes, filters, brake pads, etc. My point, bang for the buck is outstanding compared to other vehicles because capability and durability are at the top in the 100s for essentially the same cost in maintenance. In the long run, the 100s are Best Buys.

2000 LX470. I had to replace the throttle body at about 55,000 miles. That's it other than brakes and tires.

'99 with no issues. Rate it a 10. I did replace the power antenna and driver lumbar motor while under warranty. 84,000 miles. Just upgraded to TJM front bumper and Slee rear bumper, and Slee sliders. Now I can beat it up a little. So far, offroad before the mods, I could go just about anywhere, but now I'm better protected.

'99 with 150k

Small problems: seat heaters won't work, windows are slow down and have to be helped up sometimes (mainly rear). But it's been in 1 major and 1 minor accident too. And I think there's head marks in the headliner in the 3rd row, I didn't see that big drop-off behind the dune at the beach and we all went for a little flying lesson. I think it was only 3-4 feet up, but the people in the 3rd row caught hell when we hit.
