New transmission and a repaint at 135k miles? It looks very nice but for the asking price I would rather have the original color and what happened to the tranny?

about $20k too much
Helpful....will be interesting to see how it fares at auction. I like to be reasonable; rigs with over 200k go for 25k if in good shape. I would like to hear from others as to their views on price. Best to hear from guys who look at these all the time. Thanks for weighing in.

Transmission was replaced during the refresh. It was in an accident. I don’t know what happened as it was under prior ownership. In any case, I haven’t had any issues since the change back in 2011. I think black pops but that is more of a subjective call. Eye of the beholder and all that. I think this discussion is good as there is a question as to whether originality is preferred vs updated parts and not having to worry about replacing. These run forever but some parts have to be maintained replaced after 20 years! Jeep the comments coming. I am no expert so it is good to have these views before auction if it doesn’t sell before that. Thanks!

Really nice rig. I follow them closely and would say that color change is a big deal for the purists. Black LC are very rare so that may help it for the buyer who buys only black cars, but the dark green OEM color would have been my preference on the restoration. I would also suspect it is a "collector's" version with the small cheap OEM added decal missing from the fender. 40th models in 97 had the two tone interior in tan. Not sure if any collectors had grey interiors that year so I could be wrong on that and this could be one of the few "regular" LC made in 97 but the dark paint on the wheels tell me "collector."

Supercharger is cool and rare. Kind of a conversation piece. It would be cool to find the "supercharger" decals that came in the TRD kit and add them to the truck in a tasteful way. The trans issue might have been from the extra HP but I doubt it.

Value, I think an original, clean, rust free 97 with 135k miles is worth $18k to $27k range. Paint and leather condition make the price range this much. This one is very nice and as the years go by, the paint change might not mean as much. Right now it is a factor in my opinion. This is only my option, but if it were OEM color I think it would be a $30+ rig all day long. It may even be in that range to a well-healed, person who just wants a very nice cruiser for the country club.

GLWTS.

Pricing- agreed as above. If it was original through out - $30’s. I sold a ‘97, 4.7 Slee swap with TRD SC, all the mods- $41k this past year.

This is exactly why I posted here. Thanks for the great insight. You are right; this is a Starbucks runner and not a hill climber. It would be interesting to determine if it was a 40th anniversary edition. The original color was two tone green, not sure about interior. But given the blue/grey dash, I think this is the original interior color. The SC was added during the refresh in 2011, so stickers lost to time....
In any event, it has been a great daily driver for me over the past 5 years and I am sure it will make the next owner very happy for many miles to come. I couldn’t imagine driving regularly at highway speeds and everyday traffic without the extra power. And the engine bay looks way cooler with that silver bolt on unit! Keep the comments coming. And for that special someone looking this over at the country club with a choice single malt in hand, have another and then give me a shout. They don’t make em like this anymore (and as per the comments, may never have made them like this to start)! This will stand out among the Range Rovers....

It looks like you had a standard one, but in the Two Tone Green/gray(2AC). I don’t have statistics on it, but anecdotally to me that’s even more rare and valuable on a landcruiser (not lx) if it had been preserved.

The fact that it’s been in an accident, with front damage (and replaced panels?) and replaced drivetrain, may limit interest from some too at premium levels. It would for me.

That said, what you have now looks clean. So I’m sure you’ll find a buyer at some price.

Pretty sure the 40th versions were solid Dark Emerald Pearl with tow-tone tan interior and the dark/black inset wheels. The Emerald Pearl / Moonglow exterior is listed with Grey interior only in the factory 97 brochure. Not sure if you could get the "collector" in that combo or yours was just a standard 97 version. The clue may be the wheels. I do not remember if the black painted insets were for ALL 97 models or just the 40th and Collector versions. My guess would be that yours in a two tone Green/Moonglow grey interior "collectors" model with the OEM black wheel inserts. Beautiful!

Here is a closer pic of the wheels (And a couple underbody in cast that reveals anything). I admit I never noticed that they may have been an alternate model....learning something new with every post!

1997 Land Cruiser Collector's Edition

Here are the actual sales numbers and an in-depth breakdown for 40th Anniversary and Collector Edition Land Cruisers.

· Toyota Sold a total of 14,981 of the 1997 model year Land Cruisers.
· For model year 1997, 44% of the Land Cruisers were special editions. This includes both 40th and Collector Edition.
· The special edition sales were 26% 40th Anniversary and 17% Collector Edition.
· Of the 3,946 - 40th Anniversary models, 1,604 were equipped with factory diff locks for a total of 41% install rate.
· Of the 2,616 Collector Edition models, 822 were equipped with factory diff locks for a total of 31% diff lock install rate.

In short, the Collector Edition equipped with factory diff locks is the most rare of the 1997 Land Cruisers. Fewer Collector Edition LCs were built and even fewer had the factory diff lock option.

How rare are is the diff lock option on the 1997 Land Cruiser?
· Of the non-special edition Land Cruisers, only 2,449 were equipped with diff locks.
· For the 1997 model year (all LC including special editions) Land Cruiser, 4,875 were equipped with factory diff locks for an install rate of 33%.

What was the difference between a 40th and a Collector Edition? What is the most rare of the models?
· The 40th Anniversary Edition was built between 1/5/1995 and 5/11/1997
· The 40th Anniversary Edition package included: two-tone leather seats, leather headrest, leather steering wheel, body side moldings, unique paint color option (1B2 Antique Sage), 40th badging with unique number and 40th floor mats.
· The 40th Edition was only available in two colors.
1. 1B2 Antique Sage Pearl (3,063 built)
2. 6M1 Dark Emerald Pearl (2,960 built), but not unique to 40th only.
· Many options were standard with the exception of Sunroof and Premium Audio. The premium audio was ordered on 100% of the 40th Land Cruisers any way. The sunroof was ordered on all but 4.
· The most rare 40th Anniversary Land Cruiser was built without sunroof and in the 1B2 Antique Sage Pearl color. Only 4 were built in that configuration.
· The 40th Anniversary Edition was so popular that Toyota Motor Sales decided to build an additional limited edition model loaded with options and call it the Collector Edition.
· The Collector Edition was the second to be produced and was built between 7/31/1997 and 1/21/1998. In fact, the very last of the 1997 model year Land Cruisers built for the US market was a Collector Edition with VIN ending in 188468.
· Collector Edition package included: automatic air conditioner, leather steering wheel, privacy glass, leather power sport seats, leather headrest, premium audio, sunroof, body side moldings, black pearl badging, collector’s edition badge, collector edition floor mats.
· The Collector Edition was available in all colors other than the 1B2 Antique Sage Pearl, which was exclusive to the 40th.
· The Collector Edition came standard with almost all available factory options. The only factory options that could be changed was to add diff locks and/or change the color.
· The most rare Collector Edition was a two-tone green/gray exterior with diff locks (9 built in this configuration). Second to that is the Moonglow Pearl with diff locks (24 built) and this is what I have.

There’s not really any need to debate or guess at this. It’s a standard, not 40th, not collector version:

Thanks! She is still special to me...although, as noted, has had some work done😂
