I'm on the verge of selecting a GM crate engine, 350 Ramjet with 350 hp, to put in a 72 FJ40.

Pretty exciting, BUT, looks like it requires 92 octane gas. Compression is listed as 9.4 to 1.

Any experience out there in running such a setup on good ol' 87 octane? Any thoughts on such concerning warranty issues?

I'm thinking of this engine also. Since it has a knock sensor I would assume you could run 87 in it but you probably won't get the 350hp out of it.

Running the local 87 octane mandated ethanol blend in my 383, TPI. No issues to date. No dyno testing either. LOL

350 hp

The 350 hp is nice, but I'm really after the clean ramjet setup. Besides, the main driver of this rig is the co-builder, my 16 year old son Nate.

Anyone else got comments or experience?

9.4:1 isn't that high, is it? I have to run 92 in the 350 in my truck, but it's more like 10.5:1 IIRC.

Ram Jet

Ironpig Offroad just completed a Ram Jet with a H55 trans in my FJ55, I agree, the clean look was one of the reason I went with it plus it has a palm size computer mounted on the engine so no complicated wiring, just connect add gas and start. As for the high test, you should get better MPG running 91 or higher. Trust me after you drop the cash for that engine and trans plus resto cost what's a couple more bucks for good gas? Lot's of good info on TLC's site, and great pic's at www.tlcicon.com and www.proffittscruisers.com

Those look like ram horns but not stock. Can you use ram horns on a ram jet engine? I just got some corvette ran horns for my old beat up 350 and would like to use them on my new ram jet!

Thanks, Scott

Should not be a problem....that is what I put on this RamJet after Sanderson told me that they would not sell me the QP1000 headers because of fittment issues with a 'slanted spark plug' on the Vortec head...

Interesting. The plugs on my vortec heads don't seem too slanted...

Headers

Lance at IPOR did have small issue with the fit but was able to make it work. Since I'm pretty limited on tech issue's, I got my information from TLC and they use this header on all thier Ram Jet installs and the fact they hug the motor and may help with exhaust clearance issues.

Probably removing material from the header with a carbide to make it clear the plugs.

I have another RamJet here, I am going to order a set and see what happens.
