Hey team,

I've got an appointment later on in July to see the fine folks at Slee Offrad for some work. We'll be getting a new front bumper with our winch mounted and some sliders. I'm tossing around a few other ideas of adds, but we'll see.

The time feels right to choose a roof rack since I'm already dropping money on modifications. I've seen only a handful of threads concerning racks for our trucks though.

My question is: What is the best rack for our purpose?

Some things we'll need it for:
- A 270 degree awning
- Several light bar locations
- Potential RTT
- Rooftop box (already have a 21 sq ft thule)
- Typical everyday storage and tie down requirements
- Would like to be able to use the sunroof

I appreciate your input!
Chris

For that kind of flexibility, you should consider a FrontRunner. I think there are better looking racks, but the modular design and endless places to bolt stuff to is a huge advantage. It does sit high, but this makes it a lot easier to get at your fasteners for your RTT. Some people also store a table underneath, something I'm working on building for myself since the ones they sell are hideously overpriced.

Good luck.

Gamiviti will be able to get your rack sorted out. Tim is a vendor here and a great individual to work with. He is local to Slee Offroad as well here in Colorado.

I’m really happy with my Prinsu

How easy is it to add accessory mounts into the T-channels? Also, do you have any issues with the wind noise or the wind deflector? Do you have any concern on the security of the t-channel bars connection to the rail? I really like the look, and the cost is very reasonable.

I really like the configuration of this rack. The price is a bit higher than the Prinsu, but it looks like they've also put more into accessory R&D. I like the way the bars slide into the rails. To me, that seems like a more secure setup. The big thing I'm not seeing on this one is the wind noise/deflector? Could anyone comment on their experience?

Several members have some great pictures of their racks from him. I looked at his page and I'm not sure if the tubular design is for me. I think I'm sold on the idea of sliding brackets depending on the situation. The addition of mounting points is also a big sell for me.

Another ridiculously long Taco post. Sorry.

I’m on my second Front Runner rack, having had one on my prior FJ. The modularity and accessories they offer is where it is at. I’ve been able to very easily switch from a RTT, to a strapped down OzTent, sometimes with boxes or with bags, or with rotopaxs, or scepter MFCs, I have a propane bottle mount that sometimes goes. Then I can take it all off quickly. Slap bikes or kyacks, or whatever weird home improvement thing. Like a 200 pound garage storage rack. Bring 3 friends, you’re be amazed what you can fit up there. I’ve also had a Foxwing awning mounted to it, then sold it. And may or may not get another awning (east coast wheeling, we have trees, not much need for them).

I can “half rack” it later, should I only want the back half. I can take slats out if I want to open up a sunroof area or need more slats for heavier loads. You’re not restricted to anything. And with their vast list of accessories, Front Runner has everyone else playing catch up. I know someone in here had a QC issue, it happens, but Front Runners customer service, for me at least, has been the best across any company I’ve contacted.

I don’t like Prinu racks for one reason. Mounting surface area. On Front Runner racks, they have big mounting spacers that are the same size as the factory rack that distribute the load across about 3-4” by the full width of the roof channel.

Prinus cheaps out here, and uses washer style spacers. Which puts WAY less surface area than Front Runner/factory mounting design. And when I think of a rack, that will carry stuff beating down a trail, I don’t like the idea of hundreds of pounds being placed on about a 1/5 of the surface area as the factory rack that only held 150 pounds. It’s just plain cheap, and a way to get the rack out the door faster because a specific mounting design doesn’t have to be fabricated. It’s like huge heavy steel bumpers that bolt to the frame with only the front frame horn bolts. It looks good, but the devil is in the details.

I’m sure someone will say they’ve never had a problem, but have they ever laid their rack up against a tree when off roaring. And the rack saved the roof and the mounting surface? Because I’m at 3 time doing that now.

Eezi-awn would be my next bet. They are making some good options now. You just really need to know exactly the length you need, and they are welded, and no adjusting later. They use an older track mounting design, which is very good. I actually really like it more than the Front Runner. But Eezi-Awn doesn’t allow a table to mounted to the side, which I live about my FR.

I do have the $500 table that mounts under the Front Runner. And it is worth every penny. I’ve had it for 4+ years or so, it’s incredibly fast to get out or put away, it’s super tough and rattle free. I know the price tag makes people sway away. It was purchased for my FJ as space was more of a premium, but being able to always have a fast table has made a “camp kitchen” much easier to actually work off of the back than drawers and fridge slides that block access to the rest of the cargo area. I can easily set up a real “L-shape” cooking area behind the truck. Or have a full size table to eat at, away from the truck. Plus, you’ll use it all the time. Every meal. It not like off road lights, and how many times do they actually get used? But a table that I store totally separate of the cargo and roof load, when eating, 3 times a day, becomes really, really nice.

This, I completely agree. I can’t stand how the Prinsu mounts to the roof, it also leaves a very large gap between the roof, spacers and rack which is unsightly. On the K9 racks I’ve seen the black anodizing turns purple after a year or so in the desert and I also don’t like the fact there are 60 nuts and bolts you have to deal with to mount it and make it level. The Frontrunners are great although on my rig I couldn’t get it to sit flat. I worked with Frontrunner and they sent out new rails which didn’t fix the issue and their engineers agreed I have everything installed correctly. I ended up with a Rhino Rack Pioneer Platform with the backbone mount. I freaking love it, it mounts directly to the roof, no spacers required. I have some K9 accessories and Frontrunner accessories that work on it as well. It sits very low so you probably couldn’t put a table under it but I haven’t really looked into it or tried to make one work.

I bought an after market fairing to get rid of the frontrunner slimline2 wind noise.
Its the shiznittle but takes some tinkering. Inno is the brand name. Three universal mounts and it detaches within minutes, hand nuts, no pun intended. I never was satisfied with the frontrunner wind fairing so i opted to explore. This works well its mounted to my
light bar which only see use when on night runs. So 99% of the time its a non-issue

For those interested in something like Taco mentioned, take a look at the Snow Peak Iron Grill Table (IGT). It looks to be a slick modular freestanding table system that packs down well. Drifta on YouTube has a couple of good videos demonstrating it. I haven't seen one IRL, and don't camp enough to justify the price, but some of y'all probably do.

Do you remember which size you went with, I have the same front runner rack and the included wind deflector is horrible.

Nope but mine measures 48” length by 4 3/8” tall.

Question about the 8 rack mounting points: are they reinforced or structurally stronger than the rest of the "roof track"? (the 1" or so wide by 3/4" deep channel containing the mounting points, with the rest covered by the black plastic strip)

Or put another way, is there any harm if a roof rack places pressure on the "roof track" in between the mounting points?

(Just thinking about some DIY approaches)

The mounting positions are kind of close to the pillars so I would expect some difference in strength between using the existing holes versus drilling new holes in the channel (as substitutes, not complements). It seems like most fabricators use 3-4 of the stock mounting points as the foundation for the rack and then the load is distributed from there.

Well, I pulled the trigger on the Front Runner Slimline II. We also bought the Rhino-Rack Batwing awning with a few walls. We're pretty excited to get this setup when I finally make it home. I'll keep an ear out for the wind noise and see if another deflector is required.

Thank you all for your recommendations and input. @Taco2Cruiser True, your response was long, but as always, with great insight. Thanks!

I’m here for you buddy.

Side note, I’m gonna have Bud build me a wind fairing. It’s not something I’m gonna do soon, maybe later this year. But I’m sure he could just make two of you wanted one.

Let us know how the foxwing goes. I had, and sold an old one, but it was because I had to carry the pole separate. I just recently found out the new one had the poles always in the awning. Which makes it great.

FYI, the channel isn't 1" wide at the bottom of the channel. I learned this through fabbing up my own mounts for the prinsu. there are two small ridges, one on either side of the interior bottom. max width at the bottom is about 7/8" if you actually want it to rest on the bottom of the channel. I used 3/4 because it was a standard size easy to come by.

Thanks LGM.

Question for everyone: I know the channels aren't parallel, but does anyone happen to know if the channels are straight, or curved?

I've been noodling a DIY design that would have a continuous mounting rail on each side. Pretty easy if they are straight, more work if they are curved. They look pretty straight, but I can't really tell for sure without removing the factory rack.

Slight curve to the channel, refer to pic.
