now this is something i have never seen before. when ever i have had a "broken birfeild" it is the actual birfeild that is shattered. when i pulled the spindle off and got down to the birfield it looked fine, a few dings but no cracks, chips, chunks so i grabbed the birfield and pulled it out.
this is what i saw...
no obvious damage till you take hte unit from the housing and the inner shaft stayed behind. at first i thought the retainer ring had come loose...

ok, so call me slow, but does this mean that the birf "swelled" and allowed the birf bearings to just spin inside the birf? Or, does it mean that cause the retainer blew and the birf swelled that the shaft recessed into the diff and disengaged the birf? Either way thats one crazy failure.

well, it seems the race disinigrated and the balls stepped on out for a vacation allowing the inner to spin freely of the outer.
i EXPECTED to see a busted center unit or broken hubs...
but no, it had to be something new and interesting that i wanted to share...
cheers

Interesting eh? Those are the mid sized birfs? If I have the right info, you can use the 1980's birfs, but not the 80 series birfs as replacements?

i ended up using a replacement (the one in the picture) to replace it. straight bolt up so who knows...
cheers
