so the other weekend i am out wheeling and i break something in the front end. i have electric lockers, open diff and 36" tractor tires.
the front end no longer has power getting to the wheels so the question is

1: center unit busted
2: inner axle busted
3: inner birfield race busted
4: birfield busted
5: electrice hubs broke
6: pinion busted
7: stub end of axle busted
8: all studs broken off

i had never taken one of these apart before so this is fun. i was going straight ahead when the damage occured. i was not backing up. i was not turning the wheel left or right. the damage occured as i was attempting to climb out of a creek bed. the tires were spinning at a good speed. the damage is NOT something i have ever seen before in 25 years of wrenching on cruisers.

i could turn the pinion easily by hand.
i was able to drive back to the trailer under my own power in 2 wheel drive.
i could turn left and right easily.
when jacked up i could turn the front tires easily with the hubs showing locked.
there was no noise when the item broke.

so what broke?

cheers

1990 PZJ70 reverse pinion front diff 4.10 gearing...

now remember i have never seen this happen before...

Is it one of the points 1 to 8 you listed above? so anything on the transfer can be excluded?
thanks

Definately not a birf. If you bust one of those you get little or no steering, or at least thats been my experience. Cant be an axle shaft or a hub cause its impossible to bust both at the same time and I suspect that you had your locker engaged. So that leaves the locker assembly, the diff, or the pinion. I am gonna guess the pinion broke right after the bearings, and right before the teeth. I bet its a nice clean break too.

nice summary...
no correct answer yet...

the high pinon front are noted for snapping the actual carrier.
the electric locking hubs are noted for breaking (or so i have read).

(there is no locker in the front, it is an open front diff)

please keep trying, i will post pics later this aft...

another hint, i could drive ahead and back with the hubs locked but no power to the wheels...

Pinion is my bet.

X2 my best bet ..

coz if you have other part broke you can turn easy both front wheels.

I vote # 8-all studs broken off. My reasoning? You have not seen this before in 25 years. Seems like it would be uncommon for all studs to break off.

okay, further hint... a broken pinion will lock up if driven backwards. the pinion will fall into the crown and bind..

what i am doing is the same as the rest of you, when it broke i tried to figure out what it was...

the pinion is ruled out...

nope...
further hint:
so we are taking it apart and test each axle shaft, the left one turns with a bit of resistance, the right turns easily. neither one makes any noise at all...

i susected that as well but nope...

with the hubs locked or unlocked either way the driveshaft turned easily...
