Came across this while looking for info on my next car project. Not sure if anyone has ever seen this but wow is all I have to say. And it is AWD to boot.

"Back in the early 2000′s, when import and sport compact drag racing was hitting the main spotlight, several race teams were experimenting with Toyota‘s Supra 2JZ-GTE powerplant. Whether it was in their Pro RWD drag car or their Street Tire class Supras, the 2JZ seemed to be the engine to beat when it came to making plenty of reliable horsepower. Even today, Titan Motorsports has shown just how great the 2JZ can be in their Scion tC drag car which is currently lapping 3′s in the 1/8th-mile repeatedly.
What many didn’t know however were that those same teams were also experimenting with other Toyota powerplants, perhaps to find a leg up on their competition. Another main reason was that they knew sooner or later 2JZ-GTE’s would be hard to come across. The Supra was no longer in production and sooner or later the engines were bound to be extinct. Even though that day still hasn’t come, those teams thought ahead and many of them did indeed test with larger power plants, mainly the 4.5L Landcruiser motor. Its inline-six design was similar to the Supra’s 2JZ-GTE and many figured this 1FZ-FE would take forced induction well.
But at the end of the day, the Landcruiser power plant never became a necessity for many drag teams, already having plenty of success with the potent 2JZ. This doesn’t mean that the dream has died, and for some aspiring enthusiasts there are still Supras being built out there with the idea of sporting a large 4.5L under the hood.
Here is one that has recently surfaced, sporting a gigantic turbo ready to be unleashed. It is worth noting that this project looks to be out of Japan (Ed.: It’s actually from Russia), with the right-hand drive and barely visible R34 Skyline GT-R in the background of one of the photos. While the engine conversion is crazy all on its own, photos reveal that this Supra has also received an AWD conversion, possibly making it one insane straight-line bullet. Hopefully more will be revealed on this car and it doesn’t become another Internet superstar that never sees the track."

Yeah, but how is it in the rocks?
:D

With a turbo that size? It would take days to spool it up....lol. Would work well with a crawl box though......so to speak. I would love to see that run at the Texas Mile.

That turbo look like something out of a cartoon.

That turbo is larger than the transmission in my Honda.
That their picture is a testament to the thrashing a 1FZ can take.

I am shocked to see the stacked scavenge pumps under the exhaust manifold. I count 5 on this partial dry sump. I am trying to figure out what t-case that is under there. Looks like a chain driven one.

Thats cool that they went to all that work, for a high hp all toyota car, but it would have been so much easier to put an aluminum domestic or even toyota V8 in it. Anyone know off of the top of their head what the 1FZ is for weight?

And wow that turbo, does it have a hand crank on the back side of it to get it spooled up? Can anyone say that that turbo would actually work?

Here it is spooling up.
1800 hp stated in the comments.

You had to prove me wrong eh!
I cant believe he got that thing spooled up, although it does sound like a little bit of lag...

The 1800hp claim is a pretty big statement, but then on the other hand, he probably needs that much power and flow through the engine to get that thing spooled up. 1800hp is alot of bloody power for an I6 toyota block...

Cody.

Oh, you really need to spend some time on YouTube looking at what they are doing on the middle east with these things.... Really, go have a look.

Holy earplugs, Batman!

Not sure that the twin backfires or whatever in the first video is really good for marketing:rolleyes:

Wow....... I love turbos. Were the above road racing videos a gas 1FZ turboed?

I've always been kinda neutral about the TRD supercharger, but there's something about a turbo and an intercooler that makes it seem so worthwhile. Are there any economical kits available in the US at the moment? I know Christo has the AVO stuff, which looks really cool but the 2uz package is over 7k$. I've seem some very nice homebrew turbos on 1FZs but it'd be great to be able to bolt up a tested proven package that'd still pass an emissions test for 2k$.

60wag,
All that kind of stuff is played above my price point, so to speak. But from what I've read, the supercharger is the cheaper way to go with the 1FZ. Going turbo is bigger $$.

"Economical" and "turbo" are not commensurate with each other.

Neither are "Land Cruiser" and "cheap parts"

I know what you mean but isn't ironic that I can buy an fully functional entire car (2000 SAAB 9-3) with a factory turbo for $3500. I'm not opposed to collecting some used parts to assemble a package. If someone supplied all of the preformed plumbing and ducting, how much would it need to cost? There must be a couple of stock intercoolers that can be found in junkyards for 75$ that'd work. I'm not looking for an 600hp drag Cruiser, just a smooth 50hp boost that would null out high altitude operation.

Well... You can turbo a 3B on the cheap, im probably in it $500-550, with turbo, IC pyro, boost and subaru scoop. Mind you I bought a used turbo and welded onto the stock manifold. Runs maybe 15 psi. or better max boost.

As for your 1FZ's, not so simple to get it right. The fuel is a little easier to adjust on a 3B.

Handling wouldn't be that good, by setting the engine back more would help. Also did they incorporate the differential mount and axleshaft tube into the oil pan? Also looks like they are doing a speed-density ECU, and for some reason with all that money they didn't do a coil-on-plugs?

Also, no reason for that HUGE turbo, could have done better with a twin turbo or sequentials without some of the lag. Props for the effort and cost involved, if nothing else the wow factor or pucker factory once it's spooled. (wonder how much driveline stuff they break?)
