ok so im doing the 465 swap in my 72 fj40 and swapping the 305 for a 350 tbi aswell. so ive drilled and tapped the output shaft for a 9/16 18 bolt and mounted the steel plate adapter from classic cruisers to the 465 and tranfercase, now with the gear on the output and tightened up the gears are slightly misaligned not too bad but im just wondering if its ok or if i should try to shim it back somehow?

I would make some kind of spacer to move the gear out and mesh right, I have had to do this on a couple of 420 swaps.
How are you locking the bolt in place in the trans shaft?

Butch brings up a VERY IMPORTANT issue.

This is the result of not having a mechanical locking mechanism in place to retain that bolt:

This was a solution that I made for a 420/Orion that was in the shop a few years ago.

I drilled the head of a bolt, drilled a hole in the tapered washer that was used with the 420 and TIGed in an alignment stud to catch in the splines of the gear to prevent the washer from rotating, and then also TIGed a tab onto the tapered washer so that there was a place to secure the safety wire.

PinHead has a very informative write-up in the Technical Links section on the 420 install, which is very similar in many ways to the 465.

Concerning your gear alignment issue, this can easily be remedied by installing a transfer case main shaft thrust washer, 90201-35070 in front of the transfer case input gear. This will space the input gear rearward so as to engage on the counter gear fully.

if i put a thrust washer in front of the gear wont it ride right on the transfercase input seal? or is it small enough to go through the seal and on the trans output bearing

as for keeping it tight i was thinking of copying treeroots 465 orion swap from the tech section and use locktite and a nord lock aswell he also shimmed his gear by putting a smaller washer in between the output shaft and thick washer not really sure if it will work for mine?

come on someones had to deal with this same issue what did they do?

The spacer/washer will need to go onto the output shaft of the transmission BEFORE the transfer case is installed onto the adapter.

It will not pass through the seal.

I see so it just rests on the bearing adjusting nut on the back of the tranny, ill have to try that I probly have a thrust waher in one of my parts cases.

The "spacer" is the same as the washers used on the output shaft of the transfer case between the shaft and the output bearings. Each transfer case has two.

got some spacers but they look like they are gonna need some grinding to fit on the tranny they fit over the splines but the shaft has a slight taper and then the threads for the bearing adjusting nut start and it hits, i think its important to have it tight against the adjusting nut so i will die grind the washers till they fit good and right against the adjusting nut

also for the locking washer has anyone been using the roll pin fender washer style seen on 420s with the 465 trans? gotta figure this stuff out so i cant get this beast back together

I don't see why this wouldn't work .

well got er done sortof

got the spacers and opend up the hole inside to clear the threads on the output and now the gears line up alot better

decided to grind into a spline to make room for a roll pin and did the fender washer retaining technique also used a lock washer and red loctite torqued to 160ft/lbs should stay put!

so now on to my next dilemna im using the early style cast clutch fork for the 465 and built my own slave mount. now i understand that the early for uses a different pivot ball than the stamped fork but will it work allright with pivot ball for the stamped one?

and also does anyone have a part # for a retaining clip for the cast fork or know where to get one? or have one they would want to get rid of? all the parts stores here say they cant get me one but i think theyre just lazy

anyways any help would be appreciated
