Getting closer to selling my 80 and making my 470 the main adventure rig. Been looking at travel trailers. The one I'm interested in is a Bigfoot 25ft dual axle. Dry weight is 4,800 lbs. Loaded up, I'm not too sure how much total weight would be as I'm not well versed in trailers. Does this sound like something the GX470 could handle with relative ease? Kinda noob with towing type stuff...TIA

You are right on the edge of your max capacity for a 470...empty. I wouldn't pull that big a trailer over Cali mountains in a 470.

BTDT you need a 5.7 for the weight. It will do it but a 470 w/ vvti will struggle and get mpg so bad you didnt think it was possible.

I tow my 27’ TT around the Midwest with no problems 4850 lbs dry. Plus dogs, gear and people. 3” Toytech on Bilstein 5100s with 32.1” K02s. Get a NICE weight distribution hitch and be ready to spend ALOT of time in 3rd and at the gas station. And you have to be proactively shifting. Cannot speak to Cali mountains though

Pulling is one thing, controlling and stopping are more important.

I spend most of my travel/camp time in the Sierras. I like the idea of staying with used Lexus GX series as they feel pretty solid and fit my family of 4 well. I'm not wanting to go back to a 5.7 Tundra or spend the $$ on a 200 series so it appears I need to rethink/downsize my trailer choice. I'm liking the all fiberglass models and there's a Canadian made 19 footer that comes in at 2,950#, which I'm sure a GX can handle fine. Always sacrifices i guess...:frown:

The GX is rated to tow 6500lbs. Not saying you have to buy a trailer at or near capacity, but the capability is built in. Of course factor in water, gear, passengers, etc...and utilise a good brake controller properly set up.

03 was 5000. The rest are 6500 (due to a hitch change), so in theory they can all pull 6500 with the right hitch. I tow a 3000# camping trailer and I wouldn't want to lug much more than that. My gross vehicle weight is probably 2000# over stock right now, so I lose that in towing capacity. Puts me right at 5000-5500 with my trailer, and I like it that way.
