Purchased 2000 Land Cruiser from Odometer Fraud seller. NEED HELP.

Can you post the earlier CarFax results? Does the mileage go up at a steady rate between owners?

Some thoughts:
-The Rosecran address is a UPS store Mailbox service.
-The title does not have an Odometer reading.... which is not required for a 10 year old vehicle. So, it is possible he bought it with that same low odometer reading.
-If the Driver's License number is legit on the Bill of Sale, you can have a lawyer request the information if this will be for the purpose of a Civil lawsuit.

The interior would be really clean for a 280k miles vehicle unless it wore sheepskin covers on the seats and armrest this entire life.

If the only data you have that points to higher miles is the single 281xxx figure from Carfax, I might suspect an error on that end vs. odometer fraud. I'd look for other Toy service records online or other mileage indicators. I'd also simply ask the seller about the discrepancy.
He said the seller has already ghosted him.

According to the Toyota online service records, the vehicle had 172,000 Miles as of 2010. It was repaired in 2009 with what appears to be minor damage, headlight and trim replaced. Obviously, persue legal means if possible.I honestly think this is a really solid Landcruiser. Not a death trap. I would trust it with my family. 🤷‍♂️

Post up some pictures under hood of the radiator support, and behind the headlights, inner fenders, etc. Will help determine what has been replaced.

Interesting, that Rosecrans address leads here: San Diego Marine Air and Electric - https://sdmarineair.com/contact-us

Maybe call that business and see if they have an employee named Bailey.

Whoa, a google search brings up a bunch of companies at the same address. Very odd. Is it a UPS or Mailbox address?

and more...
This is so ****ed 😔 I spoke with a small claims attorney and he said he would discuss the case with his partners and then send me an email with their recommendations for the course of action. He said possibly finding a private investigator to look into him bc the identification information is at question.
Noted it is clear cut fraud and that I have a case, but they would need to find him in order to serve him.

Date matches.
I don’t see the title number

Ok, since we're all playing detective here is my theory:

You are in fact the 5th owner.

You bought it from the 4th owner who is a complete mystery man (and obviously a scammer). This is because he never registered or titled the vehicle when he bought it from the 3rd owner (Joshua Bailey). This is illegal - it's called jumping titles. The title in your screenshot should never be in that state with only seller information filled out without buyer information.

3rd owner is obviously Joshua Bailey. If you are lucky you can contact him and figure out the scumbag he sold it too, but I'm sure the scumbag covered his tracks as he specifically requested Bailey to just complete the seller info and that he would fill in the buyer info "later". Bailey screwed up complying with this request.

4th owner then resets the odo, fudges all the docs, probably uses a burner phone, claims he is Bailey and resells at a huge profit from where he bought.

Anyways, I could be completely off base. But stuff like this is why some states (like here in North Carolina) we require the seller's information on the title to be notarized. The notary also verifies a buyer's information is present on the title as well before they approve it.

Upon closer inspection. The Grand Total doesn't match the written total. The Tax code is for Toyota in India.

Interestingly the previous owner (before "Joshua") only put on 3k miles in over 5 years. I've attached the real carfax to this post.

This is another picture of the vehicle.... possibly in front of his house?....

if he blocked your call, he's likely not using a burner. Well, probably. Maybe.

It is. I appreciate your input about your family, that is my biggest concern. Having the car evaluated would clear up a lot as well. But from our own due diligence, we felt confident that the car was in great shape.
I do plan to file with small claims at the minimum. I’m waiting on the attorneys email for recommendation of action, but they did say the issue is finding the guy bc everything he gave us is bogus. And if he did jump the title then it’s starting to feel hopeless. The attorney mentioned a private investigator could help find him.

He sent me these photos the morning of the sale. Kinda looks like the same neighborhood.

if I'm not mistaken, the ECM had to be re-programmed to do this
Nope, not in stored in EMC. The odometer hold in it's ram. These guy's, buy salvage low miles combination meters (dash) and swap out.
Perhaps, found a way to reprogram.

We keep seeing this out of CA. Likely the same dud. Which points to, he may have way to reprogram.

Gotcha, deleted that then..

ClearVin is showing interesting Odometer readings:

I see this from time to time. When we see milage pick-back-up, to what seems correct for time span. Usually input typo.
