That’s the thing.. I don’t know if it’s real or not. His name is Joshua Bailey and the address on the pink slip is a strip mall in San Diego.
He fudged a carfax report and even created fake Toyota service invoices from dealerships with the advertised odometer.
You may be in for a surprise when you go to register. I would start the paper trail with local law enforcement. Sooner than later.

The bigger issue here is that if the seller is that shady then are you sure the car isn't stolen? If the guys address is a strip mall then you're probably going to find out all sorts of things if try to register it.
I’m worried about registering it and something like that popping up. I checked the vehicle on the dmv website and didn’t see anything thing reported stolen. I guess I will find out more though when I report this to the dmv

Sorry you are having to deal with this.

Looks like it has a newer front end face-lift instead of the true smaller grill from MY2000. I would look for matching VIN stickers on the body.
We found out about a minor to moderate accident in 2009 when looking over the car fax.

On the truck side of things...go over it with a magnet. The omission of some of the trim on the hatch screams bondo to me but it looks fantastic.
The truck is in good shape. At this point just concerned about the engine. On a positive note, it did get my wife and child home safely from 100 miles away. Only issue I felt when driving my was that while coasting on the freeway, there was a small thud when applying gas after I took my food off the pedal. It seems to be something with the transmission.

Looks like the front end was most likely in a collision and they didn’t even use the correct parts to fix it. Has a 06-07 front end. Passenger fender doesn’t fit right either. Look at how bad that gap is.

Likely needs diff mounts and driveshafts greased.

Since you paid in cash I don’t think there’s much you can do. Unless you have a copy of his driver’s license that matches the title of the vehicle. He might be skipping title and met you at a public place. A cruiser with 280K miles is still a baby, these go well over 500K easily. Truck looks like it’s been repaired and repainted, LC’s white paint is single stage, that one looks like it’s been cleared since it’s so shiny. Or he’s a very good detailer.

Pause just a bit and take a deep breath. First of all, if there is a vehicle on the planet that can still be in excellent condition inside and out with legit 281k miles.....it IS the species of vehicle you have bought. So the mileage on 100 series Land Cruisers is only a digital numeral and usually says nothing about the reality of the condition.

Allowing a full inspection should give you more legit answers and put your mind at ease temporarily at least.

Btw, My daily driver 2000 LX has 456k miles and my wife's 04 has 378k miles.
Thanks for your comment, it’s helped me with processing this. It’s good to hear about your experience with these trucks bc that was what I was hoping for when purchasing this vehicle for my family.
I’m going to be getting it checked out by a specialist in these next few days. He’ll flush the transmission and do a full evaluation. Then we’ll go from there.

Hope not, we checked the dmv records and didn’t find any reports of being stolen. But I’ll know more soon when I take it in to AAA

Man, this is quite the story of woe.

Is it a valid address? If so, perhaps have your large friend "Bubba" stake it out. Have you checked with dealerships to verify the invoices are frauds?

$16,000 cash? As in a briefcase of currency? On the bright side you're well positioned to make a Youtube video on how not to buy a car. It should be a hit.
Should be, right.
Im seeking advice and a lot of people have really helped out on here and I appreciate it. I thought I covered my basis when buying this car. My cousin and my dad came out with me to check on it. They are both mechanically sound and my cousin is a licensed mechanic. During the inspection he used his vehicle code reader to run a diagnostic and found no codes or hidden codes. The car, the engine, and all other parts of the vehicle looked clean. I ****ed up though and trusted the car fax report and the Toyota service invoices he provided instead of running my own. It was a huge slip and now I’m trying to figure out the best way to navigate this s***ty situation that left us feeling violated. This is definitely a life lesson that I won’t forget.

I’m not sure if the address is valid. Unfortunately we found out late Saturday night and the dmv and Toyota were closed today so I can’t call the shops who the invoices were from.
I plan to made a lot of phone calls tomorrow (civil court, dealerships, and NHTSA) to report it. Tuesday I will be going to AAA to register it. Hopefully by Wednesday or Thursday have scheduled a full mechanical evaluation.

Yes, the front end was in a collision. Looks like the radiator may have been replaced as well because it looks like new.

I tried to withdraw ~$15k for my current 100 a few years back. No banks around me actually had that much on hand, lol. Ended up having to do a cashier's check, but I was really hoping to have ~150 $100 bills.

I successfully bought my first 100 with $10k in literal cash after flying out to buy it. It's just a single stack. Nothing too crazy.

Interested to hear how this one turns out!

I had just gotten paid 20k in cash for my Toyota Tacoma. So I had the money for the 100 without having to go to the bank. A big part of the reason in buying the 100 was to avoid a car payment. Now knowing the true estimated miles, the concern is that this truck could turn into a money pit.
