Hey Guys,

Searched some threads on this but never really found a definite answer. I've got this sound coming from my truck FZJ80 Land Cruiser Pulley Noise - YouTube and I haven't really been avle to track down the noise with the old screwdriver trick or spraying some water to see if it quiets down...anyone have an idea?

Mine sounds exactly like that when its wet. In for the answer as well.

Might try searching "belts noise pulley". There are a few threads in which the noise was was resolved with new OEM belts. that's what it sounds like to me based on the audio on that clip.

In my case my belts are oem and were replaced almost two years ago along with the idler pulley.

Would they already be worn out?

I had also replaced my belts with OEM about 2 years. I decided to replace them again this past weekend since I was having the same exact noise coming from my motor. It seemed to be growing worse and worse as the months went on too. I slapped in the new OEM belts and the noise went away.

When you say idler pulley, which one do you mean? There are two and when I replaced the belts and the A/C idler pulley, quiet as a church mouse!

I had already previously replaced the ALT idler pulley.

Always go OEM with these, aftermarket is no bargain in this case. There, I said it!

Dan.

I already learned my lesson on the OEM belts. Saturday I did a few checks on the rig since I needed to drive it out of town all this week. Noticed the belts were badly cracked and squeeling. No way to get OEM belts so I put on whatever brand it is NAPA has. It works, but noisy as heck. I have 2 sets of OEM belts on order and will swap again when I get them sticking the 2nd set in as a spare.

I cant view the vid right now, but I had a squeal/rattle from the front of mine. I replaced my AC idler pulley and that fixed it. That pulley was toast!

I wonder if it would be worth it to source the easily-removable bearings somehow.

My actual pulley was fine, the bearings were shot but the dealer parts guy just laughed when I asked if I could get just the bearings.

Any bearing experts out there?

...hmm

Pull the belts and spin the pulleys by hand. listen to them and feel for roughness.

Engine off......of course.....

The bearing for the AC tensioner pulley is a standard size which can be replaced. You could use Chinese bearings for $3 or less or quality NSK bearing for around $10. Or you could pop the seals off the original bearing if it's still good, clean, regrease, pop the seals back on, reinstall. I've been running the AC pulley after cleaning and regreasing the original bearing for about 5000 miles, still good. I noticed however that the pulley did have some wear on the walls of the V groove and a new pulley is only something like $30, so take your pick. The bearing for the alternator belt idler pulley is not replaceable as the pulley is in two halves which are riveted together with the bearing held between the halves. Photo is of a used AC idler pulley bearing before and after regreasing.

I've got the same noise. It gets worse the colder it is outside. I've applied some belt dressing compound and it helps with noise. I also replaced my belts 2-3 years ago when I had the same noise and it went away back then. I guess its time to replace the belts and maybe the pulleys at the same time.

Sounds like rusty bearings!

Alternator bearing, compressor bearing, idler pulley bearing...one of those...

I was getting noise that I thought was the idler pulleys. The dealer told me it was the belts, they replaced the belts, no more squeaking, and that was about a year ago. Problem solved.

Thanks guys! I will definitely try new belts since I don't know when they were put on and will definitely stick with OEM.

i had what i could've sworn was a gear whine coming from the front of the engine. i replaced the power steering pump a little while ago so i was thinking that the drive gear was off a little or that i had buggered it up when i swapped it. so i pulled the pump off the engine and started it up and the noise was still there. now i'm thinking from bad to worse, that it must be the timing chain or something. after poking around a little i loosened the a/c belt and sure enough the noise went away. i've had bad tensioners before but this one really had me going - could've sworn it was metal on metal, gear noise. took off the pulley, popped off the cover, cleaned and greased it - sweet silence again.

Good job. I didn't mention it in my post above but the bearing can be pressed out of the pulley fairly easily using a socket from the backside of the pulley once the C-ring is removed.
