Thanks for your reply, Jon.
Publically calling the governor a bitch when she's faced with decisions the difficulty of which you have no idea struck me as juvenile and inappropriate.
So, my thoughts. Both of those are editorials and lack much science. Lots of feeling, though.
Keeping kids home from school will accomplish little. What are they going to do in the next three weeks? Do you really think mom and dad are going to sequester all that energy? Nope. They will go to the movies, to the mall, to Chunky Cheese, and associate with their friends, who associate with adults.
The only, ONLY, rational argument I've seen is to "flatten the curve." That is coming from the folks that are rational enough to realize the virus is going to hit everybody, and there isn't a damn thing we can do about it. "Flatten the curve" refers to spreading out the infection rate so we don't overwhelm the medical system. That I understand. But I think some of the measures are a bit over the top, including shutting down schools.
There was a lady on the local news lately hysterical that COVID-19 was going to kill her kid and she was going to pull them from school. That was a reaction based on hypersensitive media, and not science.
Also, what happens in three weeks. Will the virus just magically go away? Nope. It will continue to spread.
And, don't start me on the stupidity of testing. What is that going to do? Make you a statistic? Ostracize you from your friends? Give you some sympathy points? Put a huge "C" bullseye on your back? What it is NOT going to do is provide direction to the medical staff on how to cure you. There is no cure. I think the medical pros are very aware of what is going on right now, and symptoms alone will guide treatment. Not some test.
You said you understand the concept of "flattening the curve". We know it will continue to spread. Nobody has suggested otherwise except for the POTUS.
Testing is to track the virus and better understand the variance in the data. More science and information; less feelings-based assumptions, please.
Not getting tested because you feel like you may be "marked" or ostracized by your friends is the antithesis of scientific practice and the definition of feelings-based decision making.
As far as testing ... make the test worth something besides a data point and I will agree. Most people agree the test results are under representing reality, anyways.
As a scientist (biologist) I disagree, and I do understand the process. Let's look at another fact. In New Mexico 98.9% of the test administered and reported as of today, have been negative. I will argue that most were wasted on people who were sure they had the virus, and lied to get it. These were selfish people that don't care if test are in limited supply, and they, or somebody else, might need that wasted test themselves in a few weeks when the spam hits.Your personal agreement is not a requirement of scientific validity or data analysis, or your understanding of the process.
As a scientist, I really don't care what "most people" think. We have experts for a reason.
The First U.S. Company Has Announced an Upcoming Home COVID-19 TestThree major manufacturers make the swabs, but the main producer, it turns out, is a company based in Italy. Because the country is under lockdown, limited supplies from there, as well as the surge in demand as more COVID-19 testing is conducted around the world, are leading to a global shortage of swabs for any lab performing the test.
I can accept testing those who are displaying symptoms, but the factual evidence you so desire shows that is not happening.
I was under the impression tests were only being given to those displaying the relevant symptoms, otherwise, that is a waste of resources.
Fortunately, countries like Italy have been able to ship supplies to the United States.
The only thing is that to me at least it seems like the experts don't know a whole lot either. At first we were told that this virus was not transferred from contact. I would rather hear the words I don't know than a made up story.
@abraly. Yes I do have a habit of talking out of my a$$ sometimes, but I do want you to know that I do appreciate you and those of you in the medical community for the work you are doing to help the sick and to help keep the healthy from being sick. I know I couldn't do your job.
