Referring back to the OP, the #395 u-joints are the smaller ones for later model winch arrangements, correct?

Is your winch single direction or double direction ?
Ever find the part number for the earlier model winch drive shaft? I can't find the replacement part for the part number 37411 35010 which is the original ujoint/spider

Just got my PTO WINCH and i need to service it, spending the last hour learning about it in this thread, cheers

Try this link -

Looks almost 19th century. Or maybe off a 1920s fishing boat. My 70 series PTO winch is much more 1950s. Of course the shafting is hosed but I am working on restoring a South Bent lathe to remake them. I'm not denegrating your PTO.

It is now up and running any idea on the cable?
You’ll find a million opinions on that one. I’m debating myself. From what I’ve read (you should definitely do some of your own homework) i think synth is probably the safest, most reliable, and low maintenance option. And I’m partial to the old-meets-new thing

I maybe throwing a spanner into the gears here !
Are you thinking to use the winch very often ?
Steel cable If properly oiled will last a very long time ,still look good and do the job .
Synthetic rope, is far more friendly to use , safer, lighter, but will degrade from light AND heat.in a few years you will have a weaker rope !
Just to keep it in mind !

Excellent caveats !

PTO Gearcase Repair:
Today I was working on my Warn M12000 and having a good time in my warm shop and decided I might have to repair my broken PTO gearcase in the same manner as I did this one a few years back. When I came upon this current thread gathering info for these winches, I did not see any mention of the common problem of a broken mounting foot. In this thread I was shown a very effective repair process. This new foot (actually both feet) were attached so well (using pinhead's repair suggestion) that I broke my cable one day when I drove away with the dog engaged with no damage to the new mounting feet.. This episode lead to another post a week later in which I came up with a winch saver.

Here's my reinforcement brackets I came up with after the near miss with the engaged dog clutch. I eventually sold the 45 with that winch to a man in Olympia who sold it shortly after. I still wonder about it's whereabouts. Strangely, my first 45 ended up with mud member landpimp near that same location, but I think he still has it. Ok, back to my reinforcement plates, but no welds like Braden 625's. Here's the link.

I'm sure it helped, as it came out pretty easily. But as I had a puller which slotted onto the studs I felt it was better to pull it out cleanly rather than pry against the retainer plate.
