I have a complet PTO winch setup off of a 76 fj40. I have an 81 BJ42 which has the split transfercase so the gearbox from the pto will not bolt up. If I can find a gearbox off of a later model 40 series is this all I need or should I scap the idea. (I haven't actually bought the PTO yet but a guy from my club is holding it for me) Thanks in advance.

"complete" means?

What do you mean by "complete"? Do you have the shaft, pillow block, etc? Or just the winch? The gearbox from a one-piece transfer will not bolt to a split case, but you may be able to adapt the u-joints and shaft if you can get a PTO box from a later, split case outfit.

complete mean complete. It is a working pto winch off of a 76 with all parts included, he said he will throw in the transfercase as well but his tc won't fit my transmision and if thats what is required it is probably more work than I'm willing to put into it. I'm trying to decide if it will be worth while trying to adapt this to my rig or not. I'm getting a great deal on it but if I have to spend $500 to make it work then I might as well spend the cash on a 8724

probably have to check with the guys north of the border for a splitcase PTO. my understanding is splitcase PTO's only drive in 1 way. someone else should know for sure. you also need to check if there is a gear to drive the PTO in your transfer. not sure if a seperate gear is needed like 1 piece transfers.

It will work if you can find the PTO gearbox. My '82 BJ60 had the PTO drive gear installed already but apparently not all do. Some PTO gearboxes only drive one way like the one in my BJ60 but others drive both ways. I think that the internals are similar if not the same between both types.

It'll probably take at least $500 to make it work because you're gonna hafta find a split case PTO gearbox. But you might be able to offload the early one for almost that. Can you pick up a good 8724 for $500? If it's a good transfercase (4 speed case?) I might be interested in that.

I would contact G&S Cruiser Parts. Many of the JDM trucks came over with PTO's and some, like mine, got pulled off in favor of an electric winch.

I'd be REALLY leery about "making" the PTO fit the split case.

Hi found a link how to rebild the pto to fit a splitcase

have to do it my self ...

I can't read french but there is some good stuff on that site, I did find a complete 3B manual in english in pdf format as well as some interesting soft top info that looked interesting but unfortunately was in french.

never mind, I opened this link from a different computer and it translated it for me. Thanks

That translated link is hilarious! I didn't know my PTO gearbox had pine nuts in it!

the pto part was completely useless to me but maybe someone else who know more about these things can make something out of it but I did like that I can get a 3B manual online if I ever lose my book, the part on soft tops was interesting as well. I'm leaning toward scaping the PTO idea as once I pay for the winch, pay for a split transfercase gear box, plus whatever modifications need to be made I'll be close to having the cash for a new warn.
