Leafs held up just fine. I've become a fan of the CCOT setup.

So maybe this is not really Pikachu-related, but in a way I guess it is...
A while back, the sun reflected off of the side of my HJ47 just right and I could see where it once had classic pinstripes down the side. At some point, they had been removed.
Well, after learning a little about how pinstripes are recreated with Pikachu, I finally got around to bringing the HJ47 back to its 1983 glory with the classic orange/red/yellow Toyota. I’m digging it.

Happy New Year to the mud family!
The transfer case on this rig has leaked pretty badly for a while. So, @Swannie was in town with his family for New Years and we decided to tackle a project on the 40. Between Napa and O’Reilly, they had enough parts in stock to replace the front and rear output seals. Parts aren’t OEM, but they’ll do.
We got it done in a couple of hours while the kids played and prepared for a late night of rallying.
I also broke the 3,000-mile mark on Pikachu since the rebuild began two years ago.

If that does not work on the rear you might need the double seal treatment from Mudrak in the speedo housing.

The new front and rear transfer case seals have solved 90% of the leaking. I do still have one small leak that is coming from the top of the case. Is this a common place for a leak? Appears to be at the corner of the seal on that upper plate. Or maybe the breather is leaking above that? The red line is the path of the gear oil.

If the breather is leaking that would mean you have too much fluid in there or you have a leak between the trans and tranny and it’s pumping your case full

I checked the transmission a few weeks back and the level was still right at the fill plug. The t-case was a little low, so I topped it off last weekend when we did the seals. So, I’m hoping that they are still sealed apart. I remember running that bypass hose on my FJ60 years ago for that very issue though.
The dripping also stops after the 40 is parked for a bit, so I’m hoping that it it only leaks when it’s been slinging around during driving?
The P.O. who had it in the 1990s said that it once had an overdrive. I’m wondering if there’s a leak where it was once mounted up there.
I may need to remove the transmission jump at some point and look around.
Pulling the transmission hump to just look around is not really a quick process once you remove everything you need to in order to get it out. Once you've gone that far it's not much more work to pull the trans and t-case to reseal them... or just let it drip and refill every now and then.

Despite a good dipping and cleaning when I redid the cooling system a couple of years back, my heater control valve has been a little iffy and I have suspected that it wasn’t fully opening and closing. Installed a new one this morning. Gonna drive today.

Scored a set of period correct jump seats today just to throw on the shelf since this stuff’s getting hard to find. Steel is in great condition, although they’ll need to be recovered at some point.
Also rebuilt the carb on my Honda Foreman in about 45 minutes. Nice little piece of Japanese engineering.

These are the old 60 Series rims that came on Pikachu when I bought it. I thought that they were toast, but we had a crappy weather day and thought it might be fun to see if they’d clean up. I am completely shocked how they’re looking so far, with two of them down. They may go on the HJ47 at some point.
Of course, my sweet daughter is helping. You can’t tell by the picture, but she had a bad fall this week and two pieces of her front tooth went into her lip. Had to have surgery to cut out the fragments, tooth repair, and stitches on Tuesday. She’s got her spirit back now, thank goodness. On a soft food diet for a few more days.
Anyway, three more wheels to go.

That comment took me down memory lane today, going through old photos of my former 60 Series life over the last 15 years. Each of these has a story of course, but here's a quick tour:
The 1983. Totally original, ran the hell out of it in the Rockies. Leaked oil like a sieve, but was rock solid. Solid it to a guy in Denver who was going to do a full resto. I always wonder if it got finished.
The 1985. I restored this one and had it for almost 10 years. Decided that I needed EFI in the mountains, so went to a 62.
The 1988. Ran the hell out of it in the Rockies. Sold it to upgrade my wife to a 100 Series. Still have the hundy.
Another 1988. Was a gem with really low miles, but sold it to fund the green 1973 FJ40.
