Mc, your talent and vision is insane!! I just ready your thread over the last couple days and have sent the link to a few of my friends who are helping me with my '71 FJ (first ever) build. The ideas I've learned from your thread will be on mine....Thanks and keep it up

Awesome innovative and fantastic build! Mcgyver24 you are a huge inspiration to all of us. And most important of all you are a master of all trades, innovator, and an architect of this fine machine! Bravo!!

No doubt, would love to see some more progress on this..

Hi fellow Mudders, thank you for the kind words! Sorry I have been MIA lately and haven’t updated my progress. I am a few months behind and will get you guys caught up to speed over the next few weeks.

@Major Nelson, I bought all of my nuts, bolts and washers from the Nutty Company. In regards to my bumpers, I can send you the drawings but they are not manufacturing prints, I just used them for reference when I fabricated them. The hole in the front bumper is hitch, I mainly plan on using it for a bike rack and possible a semi-portable winch. The hood tie downs are backwards but correct for a 1974. In 1974 the FJ40 had some strange / different / unique items (engine, door handles, hood tie downs & etc).

Day 173

I finally started the wiring with 2 painless wire harnesses, what a mess! I bent a piece of abs to hold the fuse box and computer that will be mounted to the firewall using existing factory bolt holes.

Day 174

Can you say more wiring and more wiring, I don’t think it is ever going to end. I added a speed sensor to the mix for the 700R4. This is the only way to get the lockout feature of my transmission to work correctly at high speeds.

Day 175 - 180

The wiring continues and I made a bracket to hold the CLA /USB chagrining station.

I am wiring up my 45 from front to back. I will be using a Rebel harness... Which is almost the same as painless. Also made in USA with the same make connectors.

I can't wait to see your headlight harness to see how you run the relays.
Great work!

Amazing job!!! I can see the ME experience in everything you have done, very precise. I especially love the detail work on the tub, i.e. body seams, bumpers. Keep up the great work. Can't wait to work on mine. This is making me salivate. WOW

Day 181 - 182

Thanks everybody for the encouragement! It definitely keeps me motivated.

I wired up the center consol for the stereo, amp, power station and etc. Next I installed the front custom drive shaft (by South Bay Drive Line). Then I installed a fuse box right under the battery holder.

I just completed my SOA and was wondering if you could do me a favor and post the measurement between the top of your rear wheel and the upper/outer edge of the wheel well. It appears that I have aftermarket springs because my truck sits alot higher than yours and I hope this may tell me for sure. I am going to remove a couple spring to see if I get a little sag. Thanks McGyver

@exwattscop, I will be happy to measure this for you next time I’m at my shop. I don’t go there everyday so it may be a few. Also, I added a leaf and have custom shackles so my rear stance is not stock. I will let you know as soon as I find out.

Days 183 - 187

Next I replaced all the green colored lenses with clear acrylic glass. I plan on not using a single regular light bulb and want to use all LEDs. This will ensure a great look and brighter output. Then I upgraded all my gauges to all electrical, except for the speedometer (I will keep this original).

I finished up wiring the instrument cluster by adding a molex connector and then I did the same for the dash.

Days 191 - 192

I finished up wiring the front turn signals and headlights. Then I installed my custom rear CV drive shaft. Its about 16.5 inches long and the CV I can rebuild. I originally tried using a CV from the front of a FJ60 and found out that it was about ½ inches to long and didn’t have as much flex as what I have now.

Wow! I don't think you could make that CV driveshaft any shorter. The tube must be total of about 1" long! Looks nice.

Who built the shaft? Hopefully, I'll be looking for a driveshaft shop soon.
