What is that material exactly? My rack shows up in a day or two and I definitely want to do that.
Has anyone else noticed that the main rails do not follow the curved contour of the roof? The majority of the rail is machined flat (curved only at the ends) which does not allow the rail to contact much of the gutter, but only at the center near the B-pillar.
You might want to look at the pictures at the start of this thread. Ask Box Rocket to confirm it makes contact all the way down.
I'm seriously tempted by the group buy. This is the only rack I want for my 80. Hmm rebuild a/c or 20% off a Prinsu roof rack...

Box Rocket- did your main rails follow the contour of your roof exactly? I know yours was the early version. Mine was just purchased recently and the rails being cut straight, do not fit.
Sambosuda- Thanks for chiming in. Sounds like you may have the earlier version of the rack similar to Boxrockets. I know changes have been to the original design to sit an inch higher etc. and it seems thaT the contour was totally missed. When I test fitted my main rails on the gutters to check, the rails basically contacted only near the middle with huge gaps of nearly 1/2" on each end. 1/4" aluminum won't deflect to a accommodate that kind of variance. This may also explain why many people are having issues with the Snug Top camper shell brackets bending.
I'd love to see the difference in contours between the old and current versions. You and I may be comparing apples to oranges here.
True. I didn't think they changed at all since the early version.
I actually own a prototype. I think they just cut the top part of the rails taller and left everything else the same.
I wish I had pics of the install but the rear of the rack wasn't touching at all till I started clamping down on the gutter mounts. It's been fine ever since.

The other thing to note is that I removed the gutter trim moldings during mock-up to get a better visual on how the rails and roof interfaced (or lack thereof).

Mine went on just fine, and I bought mine about 6 months ago. IIRC, There is a slight curve to the side rails. Do you have them oriented inside out? That could possibly cause your rack to be pigeon toed....

Yes, they were oriented correctly.
While the rails are curved at the end, I measured my rails with a 12" vernier caliper and the the height was consistent over the majority of the length.
I'm not saying that the rack will not bolt on, because when you gradually snug down on the 8-attachment points, it will eventually attach. The rack will flex a little and the gutters and brackets will likely bend. That does not mean that the rack is making good contact along the gutters to distribute the load as intended.

My rack has been on my truck for a year now and I've had no issues with it. I've stood on top of it many times and it's been fine.

Mines fine too, solid and nothing has shifted since October
