Brought my 2001 LX 470 to Safelite today (my insurance company's preferred installer) to get the broken windshield replaced. They took off the rivets on the side moldings and discovered that whoever previously replaced the windshield glued the moldings to the side of the vehicle body. Indeed, when I went back in the shop and gave them a tug, they were tight.

The shop is going to re-run the insurance claim with the moldings included, but I'm not sure if it will be approved. They told me the existing ones would likely be destroyed during the removal and sent me home (honestly I'm happy that they didn't try to half-ass the install instead).

Has this ever happened to any of you? What was the outcome? If insurance doesn't cover replacement moldings I'll have to order a set out of pocket. If I go this route, do you think I should just get the two side moldings, or are there other moldings? I assume if the last installer glued the side moldings, they may have glued other stuff. I'm not afraid to buy a couple things, I just want this done correctly.

Buy all new oem mouldings!! Then you wont have to do it twice. Ill get you the full list when i get to the “office”

If missing, the a ~3/4" wide molding that inserts into side molding. This cover rivets.
Plus OEM rivets if holes have not been enlarged.

Make sure all rust (all rust) removed and prime metal with self etching primer or epoxy primer or POR-15. IIIRC you can not use self electing primer if acid is used on rust, but can use other two. Check with automotive paint shop on use after acid.

***Warning: Safelite and other installers have a can of primer. The primer most of these guys carry on truck or in shop is a adhesion promoter for the polyurethane. It is not for use on bare metal and will promote rust. I've seen these guys repeatedly use (and give me to use) their primer (adhesion promoter) to cover bare metal after grinding, it is wrong application.***

Make sure windshield is set high with new rubber seal just running along leading edge of roof line, not over it. Also gap even on both sides at "A" pillar.

Before installing side molding, make sure all old polyurethane is removed from "A" pillars and rain gutters. Do not use polyurethane to glue down molding in rain gutter. There's a few reasons for this, one being it blocks water flow.

Insert rivets (do not set) through side molding into "A" pillar, before uncovering tape and setting tape in rain gutter. This make sure the rivets holes are perfectly lined up before setting tape then rivets..

Make sure all plastic clip are replaced in lower molding under wipers/hood.

Look in index of first link in my signture for some reading on "windshield".

I'm having my windshield done with the same issue. I called the local lexa dealer and they told me the exterior a pillar molding is no longer available. Is this true?! Does anyone know where to get oem trim on the cheap? Part numbers on the trim are

62210-60070-bo

62220-60071-bo

Make sure you get and trust fixed whole the windshield is out, you dont want it to come back in a year or two and have a leaky windshield again.

For what it’s worth, Safelite called and said Nationwide will cover the cost of the moldings. They arrive in a couple days.

Happy to say that Safelite successfully billed my insurance company the full >$700 for the windshield and all of the moldings. They also supposedly riveted them back in as well. The first windshield arrived at the shop but it had a minor "wavy" blemish in it, which they noticed before the install and basically asked me "is it ok if we order you another windshield, even though it's going to take 3 hours?". They paid to Uber me 15 mins back to my house while they sourced a non-defective windshield and then paid to Uber me back to the shop.

Windshield looks great, no issues so far. They have a guarantee against leaks, so that it yet to be determined. But overall, I would definitely recommend Safelite in Durham. They even tightened up the wobbly-ass rearview mirror that was driving me crazy. Keep in mind, I drove to their shop rather than have someone come to my house. I did this on purpose because I know the LC/LX can be challenging so I wanted to ensure they had all the resources they needed on hand.

I took a screenshot of the receipt just in case it helps anyone in the future when referencing parts cost.

Do you have any wind noise?

My previous windshield was a replacement (hence the thread for "the dudes glued the moldings to the car") so I personally do not have enough experience with an original Toyota/Lexus windshield installation to really know what the wind noise level is.

I will say this: It is definitely quieter than the last windshield I had. There was an obvious but still minor wind noise around 30-40 MPH on the last windshield. I mean, the LX 470 is so quiet to begin with that it's easy to hear a little wind rustling around. But it never whistled or anything annoying. In fact, I only noticed that the last windshield made any noise because all of you guys on the forum bitch about it so much and I started paying attention :) Anyway, the new windshield is about as quiet as you could expect. If anything, I'm pretty sure any noise I hear at this point is from the mirrors or the tires. Or the fact that I'm shoving a V8-powered box through the air against its will to remain inert.

Makes me jealous, want to get my safelite redone. But like you say, I gotta keep my expectations in check. Landcruisers are hardly aerodynamic

If it's not majorly cracked, heavily pitted or leaking, best to let sleeping dogs lie.

After reading so many horror stories here about noise/water intrusion, I waited until mine was literally bisected by a giant crack before replacing it.

I was shocked at how much they actually cared about doing it correctly. I never had to ask for anything. They told me the moldings needed to get replaced, they told me the first windshield was blemished. This MIGHT have been because when I showed up for the first appointment, I handed them a printed copy of the windshield section that I scanned out of my LX factory service manual in case they wanted to reference it. And the inside/outside of my car was clean. And I sat quietly on my computer and wasn't an annoying DB.

It has rained a couple of times so far since they replaced it, and I haven't noticed any puddles inside or fogginess. I might have gotten a good clean installation :)
