Pretty quiet in here... what are you working on? (7 Viewers)

Wow... and all I did lately to the GX470 was to replace the bulb for the drivers side heated seat switch that was burned out when I bought it.

That is a good question. I wouldn't think so as all of that information is entered into the testing system. It is going to a know that the engine is turning a larger "gear" at the end of the drivetrain.

Did you get a run in prior to the tune? I'm curious how much the tuner got out of it versus the factory tune. I'm thinking about tuning up whichever Suburban I keep. I've read Chevrolet detuned the 8.1 a good bit and if I keep the Quadrasteer I plan to throw some 5.3 heads on and get it tuned accordingly.

No, but it wouldn't be a good comparison. The engine in my truck now is a mildly modified crate engine from ATK. Different cam.

Honestly keep the 8.1 stock and but a better exhaust and re-tune will get you better fuel economy and a quick 10% hp improvement. They are monsters stock and don't have to work that hard to do it.

I'm leaning that way but I really want to drive both towing a decent load (7-8k pounds) to see if the difference is that big of a deal. Anyone have a dump trailer I can load a couple yards of gravel in for a few days? :hmm:

so you want to load 2.5 yards of gravel in a 7x14 dump trailer? If you want to come to southern fauquier you can borrow mine for a few days.

I did this before I bought my 8.1 truck. I worked at the dealership. I loaded my old 4runner on the trailer and took it up there. I hooked to the 6.0 2500HD then unhooked and hooked to the 8.1. No comparison. The 8.1 will carry the mail all day long. I towed my 10k trailer with a 5k plus 4runner to Moab UT and never dropped below the speed limit. NEVER. That includes WV, and the Rockies. I did have a Hypertech tuner on it and 33's. I saw 110mph at one point! 85mph was no issue. I own a 05 2500HD 6.0 work truck with 4:10's and it is not all that great. Now remember I do drive a Duramax that is tuned up!

The quadrasteer is very cool but the 8.1/4l80/14B combo is what I would have...it's a horse

Hmmm.... I've got this deal lined up for a straight across swap. My 2021 4runner for this 2014 LX570 with 45k 54k miles on it. I told the dealer I would sleep on it and check in with them tomorrow. It's very tempting. The most annoying part will be buying another set of all terrains... the amount of money I've wasted on tire changes over the last few years when swapping vehicles is mind boggling.

In addition to the LX being generally more awesome- my logic is
1) I'm going to need a third row in the next 2 years or so anyway (this was kind of an oversight when I got the 4runner and will become a problem at some point)
2) The 4runner rides pretty rough (wife complains about it every time we go out in it- the LX570 suspension is buttery smooth)
3) Wife wants memory seats (4runner doesn't have it, LX does)
4) I can take it up flag pole next month and find any weak points in the factory skids

So... Should I do it?!? @landwagon Are you sure I need a 200?

This thing makes the 4R look tiny... lol... wasn't expecting that.

Diff, your spouse isn't reading this forum. Go ahead and buy the 200 your heart is set on. You are in a safe place here. You don't have to rationalize it.

Yup- should I be scared? My thoughts are if the rust hasn't really damaged any components to go ahead and replace all the bolts and coat the thing in fluid film to stop any progression. My fear is for cats, brake lines, AHC components... So I'll take a closer look at those and have the dealer put it up on a lift and pull the "skids"
There is some amount of surface rust underneath and some corrosion on some lines that run along the bottom of the tailgate (do you know what those are?) that I want to look more closely at… also had told her I was going grocery shopping when I left home :) so it would have been a little much to bring home a new vehicle without a heads up.
Those wires under the tailgate are nothing...very common to see rust there, not structural. NY or not, I doubt that with 45k miles you'd have anything to worry about rust wise. Don't confuse rust on cheap ass steel attachment bracket with rust on frame and chassis parts that matter

I see these tan door panels and just try to imagine scrubbing the mud out!

for your information (and the folks driving 40's) you typically drive a 200 off-roadwith the doors closed. So mud on the *inside* of the doors shouldn't be a problem. :-)

My ideal truck would be a 2016 LC (with the newest face lift)- white, silver or grey with black interior- with AHC and the 6 speed transmission- I don't think this combo exists- but that truck yesterday was pretty dang close. My reasoning for the AHC is a 2" lift at the touch of a button. I'm mainly interested in driving a stock truck with bigger tires on public trails and green trails at off road parks. That's why I bought the 4R with a locker and why I was so pissed when it s--t itself on flag pole.
The 2016 refresh is going for an extra $15-$20k bump over the 2015s, from everything I've seen. Love the upgrades in and out, but I just couldn't stomach the price premium. You and I seem to be in a similar frame of mind regarding daily vs play use cases. I think the LX with AHC is the perfect solution for me and sounds like you. If I were circumnavigating the globe or went rock-crawling every weekend, maybe not.

I have loved the 4R since they first came out, but the 200 is indeed a whole 'nother level of awesome. And as I said in my not-quite-a-build thread, the 2013-15 LX is a pretty big bump up from even my 08 LC. Loving it. Get the Koons truck so we can be besties!

You'd actually be richer by getting the LX and putting the sliders and larger tires on it.. saving the cost of the rental every time the in laws come to visit. And the sliders, skids, etc is for protection to keep the family safe
DK. What he said. I didn't see a line item for some serious skid plates, either. Think of how much safer everyone will be when encased in those 6000 glorious pounds of alloy steel and roughly 73 airbags. It is built like a brick s***house. Factor in the hassle of dealing with the rental too. PITA to reserve it, go get it, put all your s*** in it, remember to refill the tank, return it, get someone to shuttle you back home. Phooey.

Don't forget the value of the adjustable ride settings from comfort to sport...ahhhhh. Dear spouse will like the ride a lot better over a lifted 4R. Heated steering wheel -- thought it was for the weak, but again, ahhhhh so nice this time of year. And the fancy headlights (projectors). You can open and close the rear hatch manually, btw.

The LX is still there… so as far as I know I can still make this happen if I decide to.

Another factor that made me hesitate is that the service history at Lexus says it wasn’t serviced until 28,000 miles and then not again until 43,000 miles. And at 54,000 dealer recommended pads and rotors but service was declined. I can only assume the owner got the oil and brakes changed elsewhere? It runs and drives like a brand new truck. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Edit: Also, while I think you’re right about LC values holding value a bit better than a 4Runner- I’m not really sure this particular LX’s value will go up over time. It’s already at $48k. I don’t actually see that going higher after adding miles, pinstripes, dents to the rear lower link mounts, dented gas tank, etc…
What I would say is this: it was probably pretty well taken care of during its warranty period. And not a lot of miles after that expired. If the dealer recommended you spend $1000 on rotors and pads all around just before you were fixing to sell, wouldn't you put it off? (and no, brakes don't cost nearly that much to do and are a 1 banana DIY).

bro, you are presenting such a persuasive argument that I want an LX now! My wife would LOVE if I had a newer LC lol. but no.

I broached the subject over lunch. Both my wife and mother started getting all pissed and telling me to stop talking about trucks. Then they started quizzing me on my “build” credit card. Started saying nonsense about tires and skid plates and slee sliders and other tires and wheels and other skid plates and crazy stuff complaining about costs of this and that and saying I should not bring up the subject of a new car after less than a year of buying the new 4runner. I tried to explain it’s for their comfort and enjoyment and they got even more angry. I mentioned that I thought it’s a reasonable thing to bring up today as I’ll be buying the Lx tomorrow. They still didn’t understand and told me to shut up and pay off my credit cards. It’s obvious to me that they just don’t understand how AHC works. I’ll let you know how it goes tomorrow. The bright side is that it’s no issue sleeping in an LX with all the room it has.

Your first mistake was talking to them about it and asking for permission. Forgiveness is always easier to ask for!

I have a twin mattress memory foam topper we aren't using if you need it
