Yup…🚶‍♂️

Drove to the dealer this afternoon. Got really close to closing the deal but walked. Checked out the undercarriage and lines again. Looked pretty good actually. Sweet truck... but, even getting a ridiculously good trade in value on the 4R ($50k!!) against the $48k LX570, once adding in the 10% DC tax and adding tires (dealer wouldn't give me a discount on the tires), I would walk out owing at least $5k more than I owe now and my monthly payment would be up $100. It stopped making sense at that point. I'm thinking I need to find a cheaper 200 and wait until I move out of DC. In the meantime, I'll happily see you all up at flag pole in the Easter Bunny 4Runner. She's a good girl after all. I drove home feeling like the spark was back.

For a long time I’ve been wanting to swap out these old welded/brazed air injection ports with these nifty Allen plugs to make for a clean desmog but was legit concerned I might break one of these 40 year old plugs off in the head.

I put a ratchet on them and they wouldn’t budge, so I gingerly tapped them with my 3/8 impact wrench and the first one broke loose nice and clean. Then the remaining five came out no problem.

Nice little win.

Doug Demuro just bought an 8 year old LC with 90k mikes for 48K!

Yeah- I saw that! He mentions in his video one of the same issues I was having yesterday- beige interior! If that truck yesterday had a grey or black interior I may have jumped on it after all. It would have been harder to think clearly.

My ideal truck would be a 2016 LC (with the newest face lift)- white, silver or grey with black interior- with AHC and the 6 speed transmission- I don't think this combo exists- but that truck yesterday was pretty dang close. My reasoning for the AHC is a 2" lift at the touch of a button. I'm mainly interested in driving a stock truck with bigger tires on public trails and green trails at off road parks. That's why I bought the 4R with a locker and why I was so pissed when it s--t itself on flag pole.

I’m one of the few who actually loves a tan (beige) leather interior. My 2016 Avalon has a tan/beige leather interior and I love the contrasting colors with the black dash and brown leather accents. Perhaps tan/beige interiors are more applicable to luxury vehicles and not utility vehicles. I’d say the LX570 is more on the luxury end of the spectrum.

However, on the new F350 Tremor I recently ordered I went with a black leather interior because I thought it matched the intent of the truck better and appeals to a wider segment of the population if I ever want to resell.

I see these tan door panels and just try to imagine scrubbing the mud out!

Ok. Did some quick math- was running this by the wife over dinner and she was having trouble following but I’m pretty sure this is pretty straightforward.

The LX570 I was looking at would have cost me another $6-7k over my 4Runner. I didn’t buy the LX so that means I now am $7k richer than yesterday. So…

$1,200 Dobinsoms 2.5” lift with comfort shocks
$800 winch bumper
$800 winch
$1,200 285/70r17 tires
$1,100 White Knuckle Sliders
= $5,100 total to make the 4Runner more “comfortable”

Add in $1,000 to rent a minivan whenever in laws come to visit (for that 3rd row action)
= ($7k saved not buying LX570 - $6,100) = positive $900 in my pocket by implementing the above plan and keeping the 4Runner.

The math checks out pretty solid to me… you guys agree?

its got to be that new common core math I keep hearing about

You'd actually be richer by getting the LX and putting the sliders and larger tires on it.. saving the cost of the rental every time the in laws come to visit. And the sliders, skids, etc is for protection to keep the family safe

No one has brought up fuel economy v-8 vs v-6... Parts are easier to get and may be cheaper for the 4runner.

Question is do you want to drive a 4runner or a LAND CRUISER?!??!?!?! I think either would be fine but the aftermarket support for the 4runner is much much more. They are almost like a visa jeep with them popping up everywhere. I feel like I pass at least a dozen or more 5th gens on my 4 mile commute to work each day.

I say keep the 4runner for a daily driver and get a real Land Cruiser for fun stuff. Take two cars when family comes in town!

There's no wrong answer here. That's the annoying part. I definitely have my eyes open for a 200. At the same time, I love the simplicity of the 4Runner. The LX power lift hatch, soft close lift gate, auto fold third row, HID headlights all give me the willies for future repairs- the simplicity of the 4Runner actually appeals to me quite a lot. But the LX570 really feels like king of the road- while the 4Runner feels good, it doesn't quite feel like king of the road- hard to explain but makes sense when they are parked next to each other and when driving- or even sitting in them. The 200 feels like you're getting into a private jet and you know it's literally NATO/UN/Military/alphabet agency approved for rough road travel. But a LC 200 won't do for me, because I don't really want to add a lift and the 200 LX has an OEM lift built in- so it's the right truck for me at this time. But it comes with all those other electronic gizmos that annoy me. Anyway- I should probably just buy one of each... seems like most guy's solution here on mud.

the LX with go up in value over time so idk, with what they offered you for the T4R i myself would have done it in a heartbeat, but thats just me

The LX is still there… so as far as I know I can still make this happen if I decide to.

Another factor that made me hesitate is that the service history at Lexus says it wasn’t serviced until 28,000 miles and then not again until 43,000 miles. And at 54,000 dealer recommended pads and rotors but service was declined. I can only assume the owner got the oil and brakes changed elsewhere? It runs and drives like a brand new truck. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Edit: Also, while I think you’re right about LC values holding value a bit better than a 4Runner- I’m not really sure this particular LX’s value will go up over time. It’s already at $48k. I don’t actually see that going higher after adding miles, pinstripes, dents to the rear lower link mounts, dented gas tank, etc…
