From my days as a tech...

"If you have to borrow a tool from me more than once, you need to buy your own."
I want to argue but that’s honestly sound advice. Plus it is easier to green light a new tool purchase

Does anyone have this guy or something similar brand wise? Hate to buy a tool to use one or two times

Compare Gearwrench with Tekton wrenches. The Tekton’s are six point ratcheting vs 12 on the gearwrench. I just bought a set of non flex head ratcheting wrenches from Tekton and I really like them. It’s an American company in Michigan selling tools made in Taiwan.

I've actually been looking and going back and forth between Tekton socket set with a couple different socket wrenches or Gearwrench. Now looks like it'll be a need more than a want since the ratcheting system in a few of my craftsman are acting up..

Thanks for all the input. I ended up picking up a non flex head ratcheting kobalt unit from Lowe’s as I was trying to get it done today. It worked well for driver side, got shock but tightened down nice and tight.
Passenger side will be a different story as the shock has broken off below the frame hole and there’s the exhaust and hoses all around the nut

Found out that RCI sells a filler plate to protect the radiator when installing the front skid on a factory GX470 bumper... 5 min install... much better. Now for the hidden winch!

Looking for thoughts on where to go next on this truck. Its got the sliders, 2” lift, 33s and will have full skids.

1) Are black trails doable with this truck? Or will it just get high centered on boulders all day?

2) Is a hidden winch a good idea, or do I need a steel winch bumper for better approach angles and protection from bumping trees etc?

Any other thoughts are welcome. Mainly with the goal of joining on black trails. I assume getting an 80 would work for that too, but switching to a 100 series wouldn’t give any advantage for that- right? Thinking about next steps here... overall I’m happy with the GX... just pondering.

Bumpers and a winch would probably make sense if you are trying to do harder trails. This might give you some ideas:
You'll want to look at builds similar to your goal on your specific model to get a feel for challenges that are likely to arise, like with the front bumper in Mainline's video on their GX460 build.

I hear the 80 is best if your goal is to get beyond blue trails but I will say that, while many said the 100 wasn't a great choice, with 34"s it is very capable offroad and is a dream on the highway. I can't speak to the difference offroad between a shorter wheelbase with 33" tires and a 2" lift vs a longer wheelbase with 34" tires and a 2.5" lift.

I would think the 120 forum would be a great place for advice.

Thanks for the thoughts here. Im asking this group just for context on the trails we do- mainly rausch and the cove... for example- I watched catsgillsrunner’s hundred do a pretty easy job on blacks when i was at rausch, but my buddy’s gx was getting beat up on blacks even with 33s and needed to get winched out once or twice when hung up on boulders @landwagon. Not sure if it’s worth the trouble of getting a winch if the clearance wont be that great. It seems its easier to get more ground clearance on an 80- and maybe a 100 a well? So mainly my question is do folks who frequent black trails at rausch or the cove think a truck on 33s will do ok- and if so would a winch be a welcome tool for the trail? A hidden winch is obviously a lot cheaper than a bumper so trying to balance need vs cost on that one.

It would of helped if I would have remembered to lock my center diff on that day.
I would start with front and rear lockers.

Good to hear your input here. So no need to jump on getting a winch? Ive always got all my recovery gear in the back (recovery strap, tree saver, shackles hard and soft, come along, shovel, and snatch block). Should I add a highlift? Just want to be prepared to hit some black trails this fall...

Yeah I would say lockers are your best bet for some of the harder trails. 33s and lockers will get you through most blues and some blacks.

A winch is just insurance. And I can say that this group tries hard not to have to use one. A lot of times a quick tug from the truck ahead or behind you is all you'll need. But having a winch allows you to unEff yourself instead of requiring others to do it for you when you're really stuck.

The good thing about the TLCA events is your in a group and can always get a tug.
There’s so much stuff to get in my opinion it just takes time and the more your out there and learn the list of wants is always evolving.

Yeah- I like that aspect

That’s because gx’s aren’t really land cruisers.

I think a big determining factor is your comfort level with the potential for body damage.

If it’s low armor up first because adding a locker first will get you into tougher situationsor strongly consider a budget 80 series.

With the cost of bumpers and a locker the upfront cost of an 80 may not be that much more.

I was told a front locker in a 100 was a complicated install and caused things to be more likely to break in the future, not sure if that applies to a GX. If this is wrong, I would be interested to know.
