Premature Rusting of Powdered Coated Sliders

Hi all,
Looking for some advice on how to prevent additional rusting of my BudBuilt sliders. I installed them less than a year ago and only had the vehicle any where near any salt 2-3 times this winter and even rinsed it after each time. Do others think this level of rusting so soon seems right? I really hate to go through the hassle of removing and reinstalling them but I don't want them to really rust out either. Should I remove them and have them re-powder coated or something else?

That does suck! Might be from the gunk they put on the street during the winter that ate away at the powder?
Probably not an option you want, but could be worth getting them stripped and painting instead that way its easier to scuff the rust and touch up. That's how I did my sliders, painted them myself and always touch up as needed. I don't have a top plate like you do though so a bit easier to maintain.

That's not right. I've had mine for over a year now and they still look pristine.

I second this. PA winter driving has left mine with just one or two small rust spots deep in the seems. You have to look really hard to see it.

I too am having issues with the Budbuilt slider finish. I installed mine about 4.5 months ago and this is what the bottom looks like. I even sprayed them with some LPS3 after I installed them to try and prevent this very issue.

We think so. I have found out that pair was shot from a guy that works at the powder coater... but doesn’t work in the powder side much. Chip sent back a lot in that batch. He said a lot of them looked thin, but he said one pair looked really good, and it was sent out. Well, obviously it was too thin.

I was waiting to mention the fix, but, I’m sure people are wondering. We built a pair late Sunday and it went to powder. Talking with our coater, we are adding another layer of powder to all sliders in the future, just because.

By luck, @1carnut will be driving down a highway a few hours away from the shop on a trip in a week. I’ll meet him at a hotel along his trip and swap out his sliders for a new pair. We stand behind our products. I do mobile installation work on 200s, so it’s very routine for me.

Talking with Bud, we don’t really have a warranty, but if something gets damaged in shipment, we have insurance for that. Obviously there is the rock hits that don’t apply to any warranty, but being small, we just look a things case by case, but this is the first time I’ve seen this. What made this situation frustrating to not only the customer, but us, was this pair went on the truck, and rusted out very, very quickly. It’s just not right, so we are fixing it.

The sliders that are coming off were never off-roaded. So after an inspection they are going back to the coater to be sand blasted again and shot with a bunch of powder. Then sold with a discount for being second hand.

This is a quality response.

I have beat the snot out of my various BudBuilt hardware. The one set I have that is ‘t stainless has been solid, despite my scraping it constantly.

Never heard of this premature rust issue before, so it seems like this must be an anomaly...and clearly Rob at BB is making it right.

Por15 sticks to powder coating pretty well may want to try and re-coat ... lots of work to remove them really sucks . I have not installed my rock sliders yet , I plan on coating over the bottoms of my with por-15 of 2 part liner coating like raptor liner just in case .

Powder coating is a skill. Done right it will last a long time.

As Rob @Taco2Cruiser promised he drove over two hours each way to meet me along our route and spent hours not only installing a new set of sliders to replace my original set with the faulty powder coating but also fixing countless errors from my first 3rd party installer.
Rob and BudBuilt are the real deal folks and stand behind their products like no company I've ever come across. I absolutely couldn't be more impressed with these guys! Thanks again Rob and Bud for doing what you do and even more importantly the way you do it.
