My question about this particular thread was this "LandCruiserPhil Did you hear the noise even with the AC off?" Does our AC pump stay on even if the AC is off?

The repair was on the AC tensioner pulley, not the AC compressor pulley itself. The compressor does not stay on all the time, the clutch disengages it. This is not to say that the AC clutch might not be your culprit, but this AC tensioner pulley and the smaller alternator idler pulley are commonly the noise makers.

I hate to drag this thread back up, but after using "SEARCH" I found it. I have the same squeel sound (maybe not the same cause).

Mine is happening at idle, in gear and out of gear, in neutral, and parked. So that made me feel better about the trasmission and the transfer case. So it is in the engine bay and the pulleys are the first point of contention. So revving the engine in neutral/park yeilds a squeel and when in gear driving it changes pitch with the shift and load, really gets piercing when I floor it.

So, I was curious about your fix, because that would save me a LOT of time.

Yes it made noise with AC off. If you spray WD40 on the pulley it quiet or the noise will go away 100% to let you know the pulley is the problem. You can replace only the bearing and is available at all autoparts stores.

Use a dowel against the idler pulley bracket and then against the a/c compressor to see if you can identify the pulley as the culprit. I'd give it 90% probability and it's $15 for a new entire pulley/bearing/adjuster bolt from Dan.

Okay, now that I have all of your attention. I went out to the truck at lunch (been driving it around lately to check my EGR...pesky CEL keeps coming on...that's another story) and tried to see if I could hear where it was coming from. I did dicern that one of my CAT's needs to be changed (On a side note, can you still pass emissions with just one high flow cat?) but the noise isn't so much of a squeek like I thought it was. It sounds more like a vacuum cleaner, the squeeking noise (similar in sound to a turbo charger sucking hard) happens at fully throttle high rev.

I am sure that I would have a better clue if I could listen to another Land Cruiser engine. I am a meticulous care giver to cars and have been known to chase issues with engines that were just how the engine sounded. Though I don't think Mr.T intended this thing to sound like a grunty vacuum at 2500rpm.

I was watching the belts and noticed that most of them all ran smoothly round and round in straight lines, but one. One of them was not like the others, one of them just wasn't the same and forgive me father....they say NAPA on them. Lord Denso...please forgive my sins for I did not service this vehicle...it was the PO...what you don't know what PO means...READ THE FAQ!:flipoff2:

So, this belt wraps around that tensioner pulley just below the powersteering pump. It is the outer belt on the pulley. I noticed it had a little side to side shimmy...nearly in sync with the tone I hear.

So about this DOWEL? A whole dowel rod? used as a listening tool like a probe or screwdriver or just pushing around on things to try and change the tone?

Just so you all know, I am technically inclined in some cases. Forgive me though, I am Yamaha Technician. I work on Outboards and Waverunners predominately and dabble in the other things we make. So I am familiar with the engine terms and diagnosing...just not so much down with things that run off a belt.

The ideas I had so far ranged from tramatic spaz-outs to not so dangerous are:
  1. Cam bearing
  2. Timing chain
  3. main bearing
  4. water pump
  5. oil pump
  6. oil pump
  7. power steering pump
  8. alternator
  9. belts
  10. fan clutch
  11. ac pulley bearing (Landcruiserphil)
  12. tensioner (IdahoDoug)

So what do you all think?
