Power Steering Pump Rebuild.."while I'm in there"

Need to order a seal kit and all new hoses for this new leak the Bean has developed. Watched a couple videos, read a few threads, read the FMS, looks easy peasy.
So the question is "while I'm in there"...Should I reseal the steering gear box too?
I'm looking at it as, Probably not a bad idea.
And is there anything else that should be looked at?
Any input from Gurus?

If I'm doing the steering gear, gonna need to buy a press... need one anyway.

My PS pump rebuild required the seals, hoses and the bearing while I was in there. No real advice on the gear box, seems not necessary though...

Decided to get a fuel filter and a starter rebuild kit too.
I'll hold off on the steering gear box for now.

Thanks for the heads up on the bearing. The kit I ordered comes with one.

Make sure you have some way to hold the power steering pump gear from turning, when you re torque the 12 point nut that holds the gear in place. The teeth on that gear are easy to damage, and if you happen to damage those teeth, the pump WILL make noise when you reinstall it.

I think I clamped mine between two pieces of wood in a vice.

Not a bad job, getting it on and off is kind of annoying. Didn't do the bearing just seals

@NLXTACY are you offering the high pressure hose these days? I remember getting the low pressure hoses from you a couple years back when i tackled this job but ordered the gates high pressure hose separately from amazon.

since I didn’t have an impact gun or air tools I ended up taking the pump to a local shop and giving a guy $5 to pop that nut off for me. Pretty sure I installed it myself though

Not a super hard job...just follow the thread/FSM/directions of choice closely and make sure to lay out all parts in order or take lots of pics. Don’t forget to bleed your power steering system correctly.

That your hands are spotlessly clean whilst in the middle of a known greasy and oily repair (I'm grease and oil from to my toes to my ears for most jobs);
Or
that you had the presence of mind to pic up a camera?

Your photo is a very important reminder why EVERYONE should make sure their tetanus shot is up to date.

If I had to do it over again, I would have ordered the cooler upgrade kit Joey sells. I would have also ordered the Gates high pressure hoses. I didn’t do it, but I plan on redoing the steering box too.

Hand injuries like in the photo above can be very serious. If you puncture
the tendons on the palm side of your hand or fingers (looks like he missed it) it can lead to a horrendous infection requiring emergency surgery. The Orthopedic surgeon may have to fillet open the palm and fingers of your hand to let the pus drain out, then admit you to the hospital for IV antibiotics. You also risk long term issues with loss of full movement of the involved fingers (scarring of the flexor tendons). Don't mess around with that type of injury, go to the ER immediately. A tetanus shot is needed if due, but it will not prevent a serious infection.

That was probably day 3 or something like that for the rebuild...I don’t remember the pump being too messy but taking it off and reinstalling it, along with the hoses, was a little messy.

And yeah, I lucked up coulda been worse. Pretty sure I yanked that pick out and continued on.
