With regards to my subject engine, if I were to inspect the internal drive gear that drives my power steering pump, what particular section or part of the engine do I open or remove?

Because of a whining sound inside my engine, we suspect the sound is coming from the area where the power steering pump is inserted.

Thanks & regards......... jack

You have to remove the timing cover to get to it. Ignore the red box and look behind the timing chain in the lower RH of the photo.

See this thread, https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=8239 , for details about removing the cover. I spent 27 hours on the job.

Jack,
What year and how many miles? Could be the timing chain or a problem with the guide.

Are you using cogged drive belts?

Jack had removed belts and still had the noise...

Your photo showing the timimg chain cover removed (1FZ-FE DOHC 24-valve Petrol Engine) is what I have been looking. But in order to remove the said front engine cover, do we have FIRST to remove the entire cylinder head and oil pan?

Thanks and hope to hear from you when able.

Jack,

If you look at the top of the pic, you will see the head attached still. There are two bolts that go through the head to the timing cover (removed in this picture).

There will be some who will tell you that the timing cover is removable without removing the oil pans, but this leaves a very poor seal as you cannot properly remove the old sealant and adequately seal the pans back without completely removing them.

That's my .02 worth.

This can be done without removing the oil pan or cylinder head... However, you will have to extract a few studs via double nut or vice grip or what ever means you have to do so. Then carefully pull it off. DT mentions the bad seal by doing this, and that is a possibilty.

My question to you, why not simply pull the PS pump completely out and inspect the gear? You might even be able to use a mirror or stick a finger in the backside :D of the block and inspect the oil pump gear...

If you do remove the timing chain cover without removing the cylinder head be very careful when you reinstall the front cover not to damage the head gasket. I caught mine and damage the head gasket where it seals against the top of the timing chain cover and now have an oil leak there. I would use a piece of thin ribbon to hold the head gasket tight up against the cylinder head while sliding the timing chain cover on. Once it is on you can pull the ribbon out and install all hardware. This may take two people but, it is much easier than removing the entire head.
