I'm hoping someone can help me out here. I tore my power steering gear box down this past weekend. The box was installed on a 1982 FJ40 which I was told had factory P/S. However after pulling everything apart I discovered the gear box was a ball bearing unit. So the PO must have changed it out at some point.

Based on the features (one oil passage, no power piston plunger) the late FJ60 boxes seem to be a close match. However my unit included a small needle bearing that I can't manage to locate on the parts diagram.

Does anyone know what Toyota part number for the bearing? Or a tip as to what year model gear box I have so I can track it down?

Thanks in advance!

The needle bearing appears to be for the pitman shaft like part 44107A in the 60 diagram. Other than that I don't understand anything.

This needle bearing is really small. Those bearings are quite a bit larger. I wish I could recall where it went. I was pulling things apart expecting to have a diagram as to how it all went back together...

The internal parts are interchangeable with the Toyota 4x4 truck '79 - '85 if that helps.

A stock 40 box sits on the bracket near the firewall, whereas a 60 box sits in front of the shock tower.

I have rebuilt a few of those boxes, and I think it is the correct one. They are in 40s and 45s. Go to TOYODIY and look at 1983 FJ45 RH drive Australia and you will see the box. Don't think that small bearing comes out of that box. They have 2 bigger than that, on each end of the cross shaft.

Good Point Cult45, and thanks for the tip Pinhead. Here is the ball bearing diagram from a Mini-truck. That looks to match exactly what I have. The only other thing I can figure is I somehow knocked the cage out of the race for the two larger needle bearings when I was removing it? I think I would've noticed that, but I'll double check the larger bearings. If that turns up nothing, I'll play around with the reassembly tonight and see if I can figure where it went.

So it appears there are quite a few rebuild kits out there with minor differences. I'm not quite sure what year model my steering box is from, so I'll try to measure some of the O rings with sizes provided in 44107B & 44107C and hopefully through process of elimination I can determine the correct rebuild kit to purchase.

In case anyone is interested, I've take a few of the common year model power steering gear boxes and highlighted the different part numbers. Maybe this will help someone else out that runs into the same problem I have.

And for the record, I still can't figure out where that bearing goes. Maybe it came out of something else and somehow got mixed up in my parts. But it does fit the diameter of the splined side of the input shaft perfectly. It's too small for the Pitman arm side of the shaft.

I know this is an old thread, but did you figure out where that needle bearing went? I have the same issue. My brother in law was visiting, he wanted to work on my cruiser, and I had the gear box pulled, so he decided to disassemble it. But then he left, and now that I have time to put it back together, he doesn't remember how everything came apart. For the most part, it's pretty self explanatory, but I have the same needle bearing in your original picture, and I can't find where it goes.

I rebuilt my mini truck box recently and got stumped as well, but finally picked up the pieces and got it done. I ended up using the Toyota kit but did not replace that bearing. Here is the best thread I found for rebuilding these boxes.

Unfortunately, I dont recall if I ended up finding where it should go. I remember spending quite a few hours putting it all back together. It seemed to work fine turning it by hand. Currently it's sitting in the corner of my garage since I moved over to a CJ style box. I guess I'll figure out if I rebuilt it correctly when it ends up on the next project.
