my HJ 47 is 1980, from Australia, right hand drive. no power steering and i want to install one, it currently has a 2H diesel engine (if that makes a difference) where can i get one?..thank:bounce:

Your best bet is Australia. HJ47's never came with power steering, but FJ45's did as an (uncommon) option. You will need the p/s gearbox from an FJ45. The steering shaft will need shortening. As for the vane pump, there is a factory pump for the 2H. The pump for your application needs to come off an early HJ60, as they shared the same engine mount. You will need the correct right side engine mount, as is is intrinsic to the pump attachment to the engine.

Then you will need to locate a reservoir, which are abundant in wrecking yards, and probably need to fab a custom bracket to mount it somewhere in your engine bay. I put mine on the left front side, as that was the only spot with decent room.

There are also some non-Toyota options to consider, as well as Toyota options from light duty pick-ups. The key part though is the gearbox. If you take a look at my build thread (see link in my sig. line), you can see what I came up with.

My rig came from Australia with a power steering gearbox on it, but when I decided to convert to LHD, I sold it (for ridiculously cheap, in hindsight)

If you had any interest in a conventional Saginaw type conversion, you could probably use a Chevy pickup/truck type gear box that would be mounted outside the frame (in the wheel well) on the Chevy, but it would become an inside the RH frame rail on your vehicle. then you would simple use all the other convewrsion pieces that are already on the market from us or other sources.

Look for a 60 series with same engine being wrecked. Shouldn't be too hard since they are everywhere in the Land of Oz. Then you'll get the pump mounting bracket as well. It's not too difficult to make it all fit.

Hi, Have a look at my rebuild thread. The HJ47 & HJ45 have the same chassis from the fire wall forward as a FJ40.If look at my photo's you will see that the PS pump fits down low on the RHS of the motor close to the engine mount. You also have to change the angle of the bottom RHS radiator outlet to clear the PS pump.If you get the oem FJ PS box you will be right & just get the 2H PS pump & bracket. Also you need to shorten your steering column by 30mm as the the PS box is a little longer and the standard box.Rob

What you need is this.

RHD 60 series box.
75 series steering arm and drag link.
60 series swivel hub arms.

I have a Troopy heading for CO in the near future.

I'll have a look to see what a 60 series 2H runs for a pump and bracket and duel pulley.

My 2F has a tripple pully/ harmonic balancer. I'm not quite so familiar with the 2H but I do have a 60 series workshop manual, so time to have a good read.

What is needed for power steering for a RHD NZ Spec 82 BJ42 ? Similar to the HJ47 ?

Yep, but you should have access to a wreckers with a HJ60 or at worst a FJ60/62

I have factory power steering on my 84 FJ40 LX, and 60 series power steering on my HJ47. Even after replacing all of the tie rod ends, the bell crank and the drag link, my HJ47 still has far superior steering. I am seriously considering taking the factory 40 series power steering off and replacing it with the FAR BETTER 60 series setup. You will love the 60 series setup, as it removes most of the linkages from the 40 series Rube Goldberg setup.

You can use the power steering pump from a US-Spec 2F. THis is what I did on my HJ47 before I put a Vortec in her. I did not use the three groove ballancer, I used the same belt as my alternator, and then used the alternator as a tensioner for the power steering.

Cheers,

Josh

doing a sag conversion should be fairly simple. the same ps plate would work but you'd have to use a truck box ( they mount on the outside of the frame on gm trucks ). you could use the original toyota ps pump in the original location or make a bracket for a ps pump where the ac compressor would reside.

i'm doing a ps swap on a troopie right now and i think we're going to run a gm style pump to get the extra pressure. i'll most-likely mount it where the Ac compressor normally sits. on this particular conversion, we used a scout sag box. i can post pics but i believe you have already seen them......

Bumping this old one :D

At one time I recall a common Saginaw box being used for RHD applications. Anyone remember the exact part number or application?

Edit: I found a couple part numbers:

27-7522(Reman)
7522N (new box)
7522 (Reman)
PS 391088N (new box)
PS 391088 (Reman)

Anyone able to confirm/deny?
