I know that stock PS pumps for FJ60s take DOT3 fluid and not typical PS fluids, right? But does that rule still apply for a re-man NAPA PS pump?

Dot 3 is brake fluid...

NOt a good replacement for PS fluid or ATF..

Power steering pump calls for ATF (red fluid).

i've been running Lucas in mine. it used to leak like a sieve but seems to have slowed. i bought the kit to rebuild the pump but don't know if i need to now. has anyone ever had the seals re-condition to the point that the leaks stop or at least slow to a minimum?

bigDcruiser,
I rebuilt mine and it started leaking pretty quick. Be careful with the continued leaking, It hasn't happened to me but people have said that the contuned leaking will kill your 900 dollar smog pump. Good luck

Oh yup ATF for the psp

Patrick

I have the Amsoil ATF full syn trans fluid in my ps system and it has been perfect. They (Amsoil) claim the ATF fluid will deal with heat better than any other product out there.

If you have anything other than Automatic transmission fluid in your
power steering pump, check the "search feature" on how to drain and replace your fluid for the power steering pump. Your fluid should be red...

2x on having a leaking power steering pump fry your expensive
smog pump.

Do you mean Dexron III? I don't think they make it any more but you can use Dexron IV.

Actually I thought toyota call for Dextron II .. ( of course no longer available ) .. here you can found yet some cans of dextron III

as long it says DEXRON ATF FLUID.(I,II,III,IV....) :D JOHN:bounce::bounce2:

So just to clarify, I have clear fluid in the power steering pump... therefore it looks like the PO filled it with Power Steering Fluid & not ATF fluid per the manual/spec?

When checking the fluid hot, I noticed that the fluid just barley touches the dipstick!... whoops, I don't see any obvious leaks.

I noticed that on cold days that the power steering groans for the first few minutes of operation.

Would you all suggest I drain, flush with ATF, & burb/bleed the system with ATF, or just fill to spec with PS fluid?

Thanks!
Mark

I am pretty sure that you want ATF in there not PS fluid. So yes, it would be advisable to go through and drain the system and replace with the proper ATF fluid...

I have atf in my new pump but am getting the groaning too when cold. I am pretty confident the system is clean. What causes the groaning/vibrating? Low fluid level?

Change the ATF. Make sure the level is at the bottom of the HOT mark on the dipstick when it's cold (so it's not sucking air).

[/I started putting the clear power steering fluid in mine and it started leaking eventually late bad enough I had to rebuild just finished today I put type f . I needed some more about some Castrol transmax Dex Merc. Tried one bottle of the Lucas but it didn't stop I wasn't going to waste any more money on that stuff so I rebuilt

While we are on this subject....do the power steering lines loop over to the passenger side and back to help cool the fluid?

There is a hard pipe cooler assembly that loops under the radiator over to the passenger side and back for cooling the fluid:

I know on the 80 series forum, some people there suggest to use of hydraulic oil rather than ATF. The 80 also calls out for ATF, but the hydraulic oil may have some advantages.

Power Steering Fluid Type????

yep...thats what I was referring to. Figured it was for cooling but wasn't sure if there was some other purpose I hadn't thought of.

Thanks!
