? how do I determine what type of box/gear and pump I have there and whether or not they are in need or worth of rebuilding before the whole thing is redone. And who want's to trade some sweat tattoo work to do it for me

It appears to be your standard run of the mill three bolt Saginaw box. I'd just goto a parts store and get a new box... actually, I personally would trash all that stuff and buy a Scout box for a clean conversion![]()

I'm sure we can figure out what to do with this situation. It sounds like most folks suggest scraping it and starting all over. I like the FJ60 power steering setup for Pigs. We should talk more about that. I'm sure Graeme would be able to help with the fab work...

I wouldn't say they are "easy" to source... but any autostore will be able to get them fairly quickly. Last one I sources was about $125 not including a core.
In terms of actual function, they are going to perform "the same". If you had a Scout and standard Saginaw box, you will notice they are almost identical in terms of "box" size. The major difference is the Scout box has a MUCH longer sector shaft (that is the part the pitman arm bolts to)
The thing that makes the scout box better in my mind is that it moves the steering further back the frame. Thus, making an easier install with the potential of NO weldingYou don't have to hack up the front crossmember.
Again, this is just my opinion on the standard Saginaw vs Scout debate. I don't like hacking up structrual cross members and that is what happens with standard Saginaw conversions. The issue lies in that most conversions I've seen don't address the weakened structural integrity. (OTOH, I'm a bit on the cautious side... ish)
The FJ60 box is another option to consider. But then again, some base this version of power steering upon the level of modification and "brand purity"![]()

to me, the fj60 is more of a "medium" duty type steering box while the saginaw/scout boxes are considered heavy duty.
In an fj55, i think any of the three would be reliable... But after a certain tire size, the fj60 would start to struggle.
The "one" complaint people have with the saginaw/scout setups is they feel they are over boosted.
On the install, i know a guy who did a scout conversion on his fj40 in an apartment parking lotIf you put a supporting plate on the inside of the frame, even if it isn't welded, it will prevent the bolts from pulling through. Obviously, having the plate welded in place would be a better bet(look better too) but non-welded would work.

see how i've got the plate welded to the frame where the steering box bolts come thru? If you had that plate unwelded, it would work also.
If i recall right, the stock fj55 shock mount had to be hacked up/ground down a bit to work with the scout box.
Its made by Toyota, not gonna run bigger than a set of 35, easy to source parts. Not opposed to the other 2 options, just came across the 60 parts first.89yotanut, thanks it could always be worse. why did you choose to go with the 60 box?
