My factory alloy wheels have been in boxes for about 12 years - swapped for steel wheels. I may go back to the OE wheels (no real reason) but would first power coat them gunmetal gray. The center caps would need to be painted to match. So that's a small wrinkle, i.e. find the ideal paint and then find a powder to match, or vise-versa.

I'd love to see some OE wheels in non-standard colors!

These are the wheels I've got:

I'm looking to get my 04LX 470 wheels powder coated. They are currently chrome and on several the chrome is peeling off and corrosion is starting to occur. I assume they need to be acid dipped or something first. Anyone in northern Colorado have suggestions on where to go and what to expect as far as cost?

I'm curious if chrome wheels can be resurrected. My LX also has deteriorating chrome, and I pretty much assumed they were not economically salvageable.

I'd call a few local Powder Coat shops and ask, but years ago when I asked them...most said it couldn't be done (remove chrome so they could be powder coated). I did find some stock alloys that were not chromed and had those PC'd with Prismatic Powders "Sterling Black". The glitter in this color really complimented my Blue Vapor 04LX. I used rattle can black on the center caps as those (I was told) can't be PC'd due to the heat involved. I'd recommend searching the Powder Coat company and buying a few or several "chips" = samples to see what that finish looks like to your eyes and outside in the sun next to your rig. A local PC shop may have an entire book of samples. I'd be wary of print from a catalog or webpage accurately representing what the final product will look like.
I do wish I would have PC'd my matching spare instead of using Plasti-Dip on it and I probably should have paid a bit extra and got the Sterling Black finished with a gloss topcoat. I am still happy with my result and often do the "gotta look back" and admire the ride even though I am walking away and will be back behind the wheel soon. If you know, you know...and that is likely why you are here on this forum and "in it" for the long haul. Blessings, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year!

I wanted something a little different so I painted my wheels myself with auto paint and clear. I used a flat black base and added the same gray color as the bumpers/trim as a second coat before sealing it with clear. So it is a 3 stage job but gives a unique color and not quite the same as the trim.

Somebody here in 100 Section just did the early 16" OEM alloys in bronze recently...can't remember who...
I just dropped off my 100 series OEM wheels at a local shop. Going with the maple bronze from prismatic powders posted earlier. Seems to be the best match to the HE bronze wheels. I had some domed decals made for the center cap as well. I Will post some pics when they are finished!

@James Bentley, @Atbspinner Those look great. What brand and color paint did you guys use? That’s the shade/range of gray I’m looking for.

I went to Sherwin Williams that sells automotive quality paint. Like I mentioned before I sprayed a base of black first then used the trim code for Thundercloud Metallic as a layer over the black and finished with 2k clearcoat

agreed… Toyota never made a Wrangler edition of the Land Cruiser
Black wheels had their time.

It has not been in this decade and it barely eeked in to the beginning of the last one.

Black wheels are like wifebeater t-shirts. We're better than that.

^ Which brings up the old adage (catch-22), "When DID you stop beating your wife?"
