Has anyone had any issues mounting powdercoated wheels to a 16+ LC? I thought I read somewhere the fitting around the hub is pretty tight without powdercoating and it may be even tighter with?

Hey! Did you ever get this question answered? About to powder coat my RW for a 2020 LC.

This can definitely be an issue on tight fitting hub to rim joints. I have a set of porsche rims that are way too tight on the hub since they were powder coated. If you are concerned about fit, I think the powdercoater can block off surfaces to leave bare.

Yea i got them to fit just fine. The back of the wheel where it fits to the hub is not powder coated. Also, have them tape off the back of the rings as well so they mate with the wheel.

I had some wheels for a touareg PCd and they did mask off the hub mating surface, they didn't mask the ID of the hole in the center (or the lug mating surfaces.. idiots). And it was thick PC. I had to chip all that crap out of there before the wheels would even go on.

I bought a set of RW's from someone that had them powder coated, but never used them. The entire surface, front/back was PC'd. When I tried to mount them to my 2013 LC, no go. Used medium grit sandpaper and wear down the PC to metal inside get them to mate up with the hub.

Are these wheels forged? I understand that powdercoating forged wheels is not recommended due to the additional heat required for the powdercoating process. This deminishes the structural integrety of forged wheels.

Can anyone verify this?
Be careful. I think powder coating requires “baking” at something like 200C. Forged aluminum wheels are anealed at something similar. Found this with quick google.
Dangers of powder coating forged aluminum wheels

There are "low temp" and UV curing powders. I read a whole white paper that talks about the strength reduction of powder coating and it was something like 20%, and that was just with a bake at 400 degrees for 30 minutes. I may have linked the paper in another thread, I don't recall.

Powder coating should also have a prebake to outgas any impurities. I would not want that with forged wheels. If my RW get that bad, I'll just find replacement wheels rather than weaken them with powder or use a good paint I can touch up.

Is that stock color for the main wheel?
Costing just the rings would mitigate any strength concerns and can really change the look of these things.
Correct. Satin black with red P/C lettering. Blacked out TRD on center cap byTVD VINYL DECALS.

I bought my RWs used with rings PC'd satin black by the PO. Here's how they look on my LC with KO2s.

Did we ever get to the bottom of the detrimental effects of powder coating the Rock Warriors (exposure to elevated temps for curing)?!

Annealing of Aluminum happens around 570-770 Degrees F. for 30 minutes to 2+ hours depending on on a bunch of factors, and 200c is just ~400 Degrees..

oh and forgot,,, powder coat heating docent really take that long 15-30 minutes is usually all you need to set it...(it depends on the product of course.. but realistically its not really that long)

I'd say its fine for everything short of say desert racing with the wheels..

Oddly enough…

I had my Heritage wheels power coated here at ECP in El Cajon.

Their bread and butter is desert racing stuff

Spoke with Donny and Scott about this and they’ve done FORGED wheels for all the top Baja racers here, and none have cracked or exploded yet.

Lower temps, longer times

Moral of the story, take to a reputable shop with the clientele to back up their work
