Should I primer a bare metal spot on my cruiser, bout the size of a melon, and then POR-15 the area or just prime and paint? I hear that POR-15 doesn't adhere well to bare metal so how would the primer affect the inhibitor qualities of the POR-15? Also, with the other little bubbling rust spots on the body, not big at all, should I clean the rust and paint before POR or just slather on the POR-15 over the existing paint and rust? Any advise from anyone who has experience with POR-15 would be helpful.

I would sand it down a bit and then use their metal ready (or some dilute phosphoric acid). Then paint with the POR15 and then with a topcoat. POR15 sticks very well to bare metal especially if it has been rusty and has had the rust killed (with metal ready, etc.). When you topcoat over POR15 you need to either scuff it up, use their intermediate primer, or paint immediately when the POR15 is dry to the touch but not yet fully cured.

thx War...sounds like the route to take.

POR-15 is a band-aid that should be used over rusty metal. It should never be applied to a painted or smooth metal surface.

You're way ahead of the game already, and shouldn't use POR-15 if you have bare metal to work with. POR-15 isn't going to prevent rust any better than your average automotive paint. In fact, a quality epoxy primer and paint will have far better adhesion and rust prevention properties than POR-15.

x2 quality epoxy primer and paint. It's what I've always done and have always been happy with results. I wouldn't use Por on the body if that's where your bare metal spot is.

I had a bare metal front bumper that I primed with zero rust then high build primer, wet sanded and painted. It turned out real nice and has held up very well. Only time I've ever used zero rust.

Good luck....
