Been looking through the threads and people are all over the place on what to do about the CAT. I dont want to lose HP, but at the same time I dont want it to smell like exhaust hardcore and my kids to breathe it in every time I fire it up in the garage

What year? If it's the newer inline style just get the Magnaflow Y pipe. Try to confirm it is an actual Magnaflow and not Bosal. Search around and there are a few threads on it. I've been running mine for over a year with no codes or fumes.

check you don't have some air holes on your exhaust. Mine are around header to exhaust connection. I keep plugging and it lasts several days and then restart. Will replace with new SS eventually

As mentioned, exhaust leak, sensor failure or sensor wiring/connector are more common causes of a P0420 than a bad cat. That code is just an emission monitor, has no effect on motor tune, my first test is to reset and see how soon it comes back.

I got
MagnaFlow 99006HM Universal Catalytic Converter (Non CARB Compliant) Amazon product ASIN B001HMAYAQAnd had it welded to fit
Most posters said it wouldnt boost performance but I'm pretty confident my 80 is running better, on top of I can park in my garage without almost passing out
