So I have been looking into upgrading my lights on my 80 (the stock ones suck) I have looked into the slee wiring and the upgraded bulbs but I have also been looking at auxiliary lights.

I stumbled across Yellowandbluelighting.com and they are selling refurbished Hella 500ff for 50 bucks. I have spoken to a few who like the hella lights a a few who don't. Anyone ever got lights from Yellow and Blue lighting or even heard of them.

I also found ddm tuning a place online that sells HID kit thst can be retrofitted into the Hella. Anyone ever do this?

Thank for any help

Kevin

Do the John Deere bulb mod. It will make your lights really bright. I did them on my Camry and it was a huge improvement. Easy to do, you just swap the bulbs.

Apparently the John Deere ones are hard to get now and $$$. The ones I found from Candle power inc are $100 then I would also need to upgrade the harness and the slee one is $45 but I might as well do the $35 harness also for aux lights because im eventually going to add them. So to do that upgrade im looking at $180 not counting shipping. Thats why the Hella's with the HID mod is appealing. $50 for the lights $30 for the HID conversion. I would like to do the harness upgrade but right now i think aux lights are best, just got to find them cheap. And my luck with finding used ones isn't working out

HIR testing <link

No Slee harness used or needed

Those are the $100 bulbs I was talking about! Did you take any before and after pic's?? No Harness Hu?

Just the heads are weak or looking to beef up aux lights as well?

I am interested in following because I want to get a few rigid LEDs for the Lexus once I get the bumpers on, etc.

I took light output measurements, much better information then pictures IMO. A huge differance the first time you are behind the wheel at night.

I had a harness, I saw better voltage numbers without it.

There is source both low and high HIR bulbs in stock. I said John Deere because that what they are known as but you really just buy the Phillips bulbs now. Toshiba stopped making them for John Deere. No harness upgrade needed.

Well I wanted aux lights because my headlights were weak and didn't want to have to update the wiring harness to get the most out of the bulbs. But as posted above apparently I don't need the harness upgrade from slee. Even though I keep reading the harness is needed.

If I do the aux lights, I have to disassemble a pair of hella 500ff and install ddm tuning HID kit. Only down side to this is it might be too bright for oncoming traffic.

It all boils down to price for me right now.

My 80 head lights are great, much better than our old '97 4runner. Unless you are comign from a BMW or other really modern vehicle I dont see how you can expect more. Sayign that I did upgrade to the silverstar bulbs and they did improve somewhat.

If you run any aux lights you should have more than enough. Maybe not the bling that someone else has but it should still be more than enough for the speed an 80 will travel safely.

I cannot see very well at night. That being said the 80 lights are just fine the way they are. Only upgrade you ought to need is a set of silverstars. The harness in the 80 isn't that bad. Now the 60 and 40 series need the upgrade.

I bought the aux oem light switch from slee for my 80 but I've yet to hook it up to anything.

I Came from a 07 350Z, Maybe that's why i feel the light output is so bad. I have decided to bite the bullet and get the high and low (Phillips/john deere) but will keep looking for a used set of Hella lights to mod. Now I had better work a few side jobs to get the lights!

That's me. Hella 550FF in stock $69 - UC 10% discount, plus tax.[/QUOTE

I might pick up a pair from ya, Do you know if they will mount to a TJM Bumper it has a bracket that looks like a U where the lights go. It might be a while with the $ of the replacement bulbs im also going to buy. Your only a few bucks more than the referb ones. Plus I would rather buy from club members.

Thanks Guys

P.S> If i do a retrofit of the Hella lights with HID kit I will try and do a build write-up

If you want to see offroad I have the lights for you. A set of used IPF 9" spot lights. They came off an 80 with an ARB.

I don't really want spot lights, That's why I'm looking to do the Driving light housing but with the super bright HID. I was going to maybe even do the yellow covers to cut down on the glare. I was wanting something that i can run all the time on or off the road.
