I am flipping through a stack of receipts from the PO, on one of them a mechanic wrote:

"steering box has a pinion seal leak"

can anyone take a guess at what part this guy called a pinion seal, it was a bmw-mercedes-porsche-audi-vw-volvo mech.

the pinion seal on the steering box comment had me confused. not really sure what part or where the mechanic was referring to

Could be he means pitman seal, the seal on the pitman shaft. My '84 leaked from the steering gear input shaft seal until I used PS stopleak.

Input seal I would assume... I have heard alot of "input" gears called pinions... Even on transmissions.

Actually, the shaft that sticks out of the bottom of the steering box is commonly called the "sector shaft". And it does have a seal around it, and they do leak sometimes. The sector shaft seal is leaking badly on my son's 4Runner.

You're confusing terms with the "pitman arm".

I thought that is .. I have the same experience on my box.
